Jackals Rally Past Capitales to Take First Place
June 9, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
New Jersey Jackals News Release
In a battle for first place in the Can-Am standings, the Jackals rallied from two down in the ninth to beat the Capitales 8-7 in 11 innings.
A win and four strikeouts from Joel Bennett's all-time records of 59 and 632, respectively, Jackals veteran Isaac Pavlik went five-plus, allowing six runs on 12 hits, striking out only two.
Angel Berroa's fourth-inning solo home run tied the scoring at one as it cut through the chilly Friday air at Stade Municipal. Chris Henderson and Nick Giarraputo singles in the following two innings put the Jackals up 4-2, but the Capitales answered with four straight base hits to open the sixth. Jeff Helps' bases loaded, bases-clearing double knocked out Pavlik.
Steve Caseres hit his first home run of the year in the seventh to cut the deficit to one, but Josue Peley's solo home run in the bottom half made the score 7-5.
The Jackals acquired Matt Cusick in a trade with Fargo-Moorhead earlier this week, and the newcomer was huge. In his first start of the year for New Jersey, Cusick lead off the ninth inning with a double. After a Steve Caseres double, Chris Henderson singled in the game-tying runs.
Jimmer Kennedy worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the ninth.
The same trio that started the scoring in the ninth did so in the 11th as well. Cusick, Caseres, and Henderson all got on, preceding Gaetano Giunta's eventual game-winning sacrifice fly. Keith Cantwell gets the win, throwing two scoreless and striking out three
The Jackals improve to 14-7, moving one and a half games ahead of the Capitales in the Can-Am standings. Kyle Greenwalt (1-1, 4.60 ERA) will throw on seven days rest against Adam Kudryk (0-2, 4.70) in tomorrow's middle game. First pitch is 7:05.
The New Jersey Jackals, proud members of the Canadian-American Association of Professional Baseball, play their home games at Yogi Berra Stadium located on the campus of Montclair State University in Little Falls, NJ. 2012 single-game tickets, season tickets, mini-plans and group outings are available by calling 973-746-7434.
