Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

Sioux Falls, SD - The Sioux Falls Canaries (18-27) played the part of spoiler well in their first game against the first-place Lincoln Saltdogs (25-20), scoring in the eighth inning to tie the ballgame, and getting a Beau Torbert home run in the 10th inning to seal a 2-1 win over the Saltdogs. The loss drops Lincoln into a first-place tie with the Wichita Wingnuts, and leaves the Saints just one game back following a 9-3 win over Sioux City in St. Paul.

Lincoln scored first, as Rafael Alvarez homered in the second inning. The sixth home run of the season for Alvarez put the Saltdogs ahead, 1-0. That was all the scoring the Saltdogs would get off of Ben Moore who threw nine innings and allowed one run on five hits, walking four and striking out a season-high 11. Moore's strong pitching performance kept the Birds in the game.

The Canaries tied things up in the eighth. Cody Haerther reached on an error by Lincoln shortstop Albenis Machado. Beau Torbert followed with a single to advance Haerther to second base. Cory Harris hit a line-drive single to centerfield to move Haerther to third. On the throw home, catcher Tycen Povey tried to catch Haerther rounding third base too far. The snap throw by Povey got by third baseman Brandon Jones, and the error allowed Haerther to score and tie the game, 1-1.

The Canaries failed to go ahead in the eighth, but the Birds would pick up the win in extra innings. Beau Torbert led off the bottom of the tenth inning with his 10th home run of the season. Torbert's blast gave the Birds the 2-1 win, and sent the Lincoln Saltdogs to their fourth consecutive extra-innings loss.

Aaron Cotter (4-1) pitched one perfect inning of relief and struck out two to get the win for the Canaries. Daryl Arreola (1-4) pitched an inning before giving up the Torbert home run in the 10th to suffer the loss.

The Canaries and Saltdogs will continue their four-game season-ending series on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. Friday's game will feature Pat Mahomes final start of the 2009 season and "Post-Game Fireworks" presented by Sanford Health.
