Sussex County Miners News Release

QUEBEC, QUE - The top of the Sussex County Miners' order was on fire on Friday night against the Quebec Capitales. Jamal Austin and Brady Wilson led the charge and Kenny Bryant hit the first grand slam in Miners history, as Sussex County (38-56) toppled Quebec (52-42), 9-2.

Austin and Wilson got the offense ignited early and set the tone two batters into the game. Austin led off the ballgame with a triple down the right field line and Wilson drove him home with a sacrifice fly to give the Miners a quick 1-0 lead.

Two innings later, Bryant put significant distance between Sussex County and Quebec on the scoreboard. With the bases loaded and one out, Bryant unloaded on a pitch by Capitales starter Derrick Penilla and sent a deep drive over the right field wall. Bryant's grand slam gave Sussex County a 5-0 lead.

The duo of Austin and Wilson went to work again in the fourth. Cory Morales walked to lead off the inning and Austin singled with two outs to put a pair of runners on for Wilson. Wilson drilled a line drive that barely stayed fair down the left field line. Both runners scored on Wilson's double and Sussex County took a 7-0 lead.

Quebec got a run back in the bottom of the fourth, but Austin and Wilson gave the Miners insurance in the sixth. With one out and the bases empty, Austin hit a slow grounder to second base and motored down the line. Second baseman Ty Young rushed his throw to first and sailed it over the head of first baseman Justin Marra, as Austin reached first safely. Wilson then drove a liner into the right- centerfield gap that just got past centerfielder Alexei Bell. Austin scored from first and Wilson hustled to third with a triple. Johnny Bladel quickly drove Wilson home with an RBI groundout to give Sussex County a 9-1 lead.

Wilson led the Miners' offense with four RBI and two runs scored. The left fielder went 2-for-3 with a double and a triple. Austin also had a big game at the dish with four runs scored and a 3-for-5 performance that included his league-leading eighth triple of the season.

Michael Suk was brilliant on the hill for the Miners. For the fifth time in as many starts, Suk (6-2) delivered a quality start. The right-hander went six innings and allowed two runs on seven hits. Suk struck out two and did not walk a batter. He has won each of his last two starts.

Penilla (1-3) took the loss in his first start since July. The lefty gave up seven runs over 4.1 innings. Penilla gave up seven hits, walked three and struck out two.

In addition to the loss, the Capitales suffered another injury in Friday night's ballgame. Yordan Manduley began the game at second base, but injured himself while going after a ground ball up the middle in the fourth. Manduley collided with shortstop Jonathan Malo and exited the game. Young moved from left field to second base to replace Manduley, defensively. Joash Brodin moved from first base to left field and Justin Marra came into the game to play first and bat for Manduley.

The Miners' victory earned them a split in the four-game series at Quebec. Sussex County will return home to finish the season with a three-game series against the Rockland Boulders, beginning on Saturday night. First pitch of the series opener is scheduled for 7:05 PM.
