Saint John Sea Dogs News Release

HALIFAX - Everything the Saint John Sea Dogs touched seemed to turn to goal in a 9-2 win over the Halifax Mooseheads Saturday.

Jonathan Huberdeau led the way with a goal and four assists, while linemates Steven Anthony (2G, 1A) and Zack Phillips (1G, 2A) were in on the action as well. Michael Kirkpatrick had two goals and two assists, Nathan Beaulieu also scored twice, and Mike Thomas tallied a single. Eric Gelinas - making his Sea Dogs debut - and Stanislav Galiev chipped in two assists each.

Jacob DeSerres turned away 37 shots in the Saint John goal as the Sea Dogs matched both their best offensive output, and widest margin of victory, of the season.

Charles Bety and Brent Andrews scored for Halifax. Former Sea Dogs netminder Frederic Piche started and finished the game, making 19 saves on 24 shots in his debut for the Mooseheads. Anthony Terenzio stopped eight of 12 in a brief second-period relief stint.

It was the fourth straight win for Saint John, which improved to 33-5-0-2 and remains atop the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League standings. Halifax fell to 14-26-1-1. For a complete summary, click HERE .

The first shot of the game provided some foreshadowing on the type of night it would be. Huberdeau scored just 39 seconds in, beating Piche with an assist from Pierre Durepos for his team-leading 27th of the year.

Bety equalized on a power play at 5:01, as his tip of Pascal Amyot's point shot slipped through DeSerres to make it 1-1. Carl Gelinas picked up the other assist on the goal, Bety's 13th.

The good news for Halifax ended there, as Nathan Beaulieu's blast from the top of the right circle on a two-man advantage made it 2-1 at 11:16. Huberdeau and Kirkpatrick collected assists.

DeSerres made a great save with the score still 2-1, denying Alex Souligny on the doorstep by extending the left pad as Souligny tried to bang home his own rebound at the end of a 2-on-1.

Shortly after that, Anthony came down the other way and beat Piche high to the glove side, from Huberdeau and Phillips at 15:36. Anthony scored again before the period was out, making it 4-1 on a power play at 18:55. Phillips and Kirkpatrick assisted on the goal, Anthony's 16th.

Piche gave way to Terenzio to begin the second period, but the rookie from Norwalk, Conn., also allowed the first shot he faced, as Phillips finished a feed from Huberdeau just 16 seconds in. Anthony picked up the other assist as Phillips moved back into a tie with Huberdeau at 27 goals.

Thomas added his team-best third short-handed goal to make it 6-1 at 7:02 of the second, driving to the net on a 2-on-1 with Huberdeau, who found him with a perfect pass from the left wing. Gelinas drew an assist on the play for his first point as a Sea Dog. The goal was the 11th of the season for Thomas.

Gelinas picked up another point shortly afterward when Kirkpatrick redirected his point shot home at 9:47. Galiev picked up the other assist.

Kirkpatrick made it 8-1 on a power play at 13:35. Gabriel Bourret and Galiev assisted on the goal, Kirkpatrick's 14th, and the Mooseheads went back to Piche between the pipes.

Piche fared better in the third period, but Beaulieu added another on a 5-on-3 power play to make it 9-1 at 15:54. Alexandre Beauregard and Stephen MacAulay assisted on the goal, Beaulieu's eighth. The Sea Dogs finished 4-for-6 on the power play.

Andrews rounded out the summary with an unassisted power-play goal for the Mooseheads at 17:49.

Tomas Jurco and Simon Despres are expected to make their returns from the world junior championship as the Sea Dogs continue their home schedule Tuesday against the Prince Edward Island Rocket. Game time is 7 p.m. at Harbour Station. Tickets can be obtained onlineor by calling the Harbour Station box office at (506) 657-1234.
