Tony Patane Spoils Jeff Duda's No-Hit Bid, Capitales Prevail 6-0

June 18, 2012 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Worcester Tornadoes News Release

Jeff Duda lost a no-hitter on a Tony Patane single in the ninth, but Les Quebec Capitales held on for a 6-0 win over the Worcester Tornadoes on Monday night at Le Stade Municipal.

Duda struck out nine batters in his first complete game shutout with Les Capitales, improving to (4-0) on the season. He walked just two hitters, and faced the minimum three batters in seven of his nine innings pitched. He threw more than 13 pitches in just one inning, the second, when Johnny Welch walked to lead off the frame, later stealing second base.

Dan Sausville was the tough luck loser, allowing just one hit in his 6.1 innings of work. He walked six batters and hit two, allowing three runs (one earned). He struck out three Quebec hitters and had a pair of 1-2-3 innings. He couldn't escape the seventh, as Les Capitales scored a handful of runs against Worcester in that frame for the second time in just over a week.

Mike Mullen relieved Sausville, pitching 0.2 innings and giving up the Josue Peley grand slam that busted the game open. All three of his runs were unearned, which gives him seven unearned runs allowed on the season (versus one earned). A throwing error by Welch earlier in the frame plated the second Quebec run, as Josh Colafemina scored for the second time of the night (each time after reaching on a walk).

Zach Rafferty came on for his first professional appearance, throwing just two pitches. Each of them was a fastball that appeared to escape his grasp, both going up and in on Patrick D'Aoust, who was visibly and verbally upset. The umpires issued a warning to both teams, and Chip Plante elected to pull Rafferty in favor of Patane.

Patane battled back to struck D'Aoust out, then got each of the next two batters to ground out to end the eighth. In the top of the ninth, he hit a 1-2 pitch to the opposite field, blooping it over Peley to break up Jeff Duda's no-hit bid.

Alex Trezza was the only other Tornadoes hitter to reach base against Duda, but he was erased on a Nick Salotti double play ball one batter later.

The second game of the series is Tuesday night at 7:05pm, as the Tornadoes will send Kevin Cooper to the mound against an unannounced starter for Quebec. Tornadoes Pre-Game Live will begin on USTREAM.tv at 6:50 with Nick Gagalis as your host.
