Worcester Tornadoes News Release
Worcester, MA -- The Worcester Tornadoes fought back from 8 runs down to bring the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the 9th, before finally falling to the Quebec Capitales, 9-6, in the series and homestand finale at Hanover Insurance Park at Fitton Field this afternoon.
For the seventh time in as many games head-to-head this season, the Capitales scored first getting to Mike Meagher (1-1) for a 1st inning run to lead 1-0. The Tornadoes took advantage of the wildness of Quebec starter Michel Simard (1-1) in the bottom of the 1st, when Patrick Perry walked with the bases loaded to force in a run.
But Quebec DH Corey Stang ripped a three-run home run in the 2nd to put the Capitales up 4-1, then Quebec blew things open in the 4th off Meagher, scoring five times on four hits and three walks to take a 9-1 lead. But the Tornadoes began to chip away, scoring three times in the bottom of the 4th on a Jeff LaHair two-run home run to leftfield and a Josh Beauregard RBI single to make it 9-4.
Worcester would tack on one in the 6th and scored another in the 9th, and had the bases loaded with one out and Andrew Wishy at the plate as the winning run. But lefty Brian Dumesnil caught Wishy looking and then induced Yohanny Valera to ground out to third base to end it.
Simard (1-1) picked up the win and Meagher (1-1) was charged with the loss. Dumesnil was credited with his first save of the season. The Tornadoes finished up their first homestand of the season at 3-4 and are now 1-6 on the year vs. Quebec. Worcester will try to get back on track Monday night as they play the first of a four-game series in Brockton against the Rox. Righty Junior Guerrero is scheduled to start for the Tornadoes and he will be opposed by Brockon righthander Mike McTamney. First pitch is set for 7:05pm.
