Skyhawks Lose 7th In A Row
June 3, 2007 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
Sussex Skyhawks News Release
On a gloomy Sunday afternoon at Skylands Park the Sussex Skyhawks dropped their 7th game in a row losing to the Can-Am Grays 5-1. The Grays finished off the three game series by sweeping the Skyhawks. The Skyhawks offense once again failed to produce as they only managed to have 3 hits during the ball game. Skyhawk Ace, Ryan Dittfurth, was handed the ball as the Skyhawks looked to pull out of their 6 game skid, but after a rough 3rd inning when Dittfurth was hit around for 4 runs, the Skyhawks could not mount a comeback.
The Skyhawks took a 1-0 lead, their first of the series, in the top of the first inning when Ron Perodin once again led the game off with a double. Perodin would move to third with one out, but after Rob Gandolfo failed to hits Perodin home it looked as if the Skyhawks would strand another batter at 3rd base. Jabe Bergeron stepped to the plate and hit a ground ball back to Dustin Nielsen, which would have ended the inning. However Nielsen bobbled the ball and then proceeded to throw it away allowing Perodin to score an unearned run.
The Skyhawks would hold a 1-0 lead over the Grays until the bottom of the second inning when Sheldon Catchot walked with 2 outs. Catchot would steal second base and would score on a base hit by Gavin Monjaras, his first of two RBI's on the afternoon. The Grays would strike again busting the game wide open in the bottom of the 3rd scoring 4 runs. The Grays 6 through 9 hitters all picked up RBI's leaving the Skyhawks in a hole they could not climb out of.
Ryan Dittfurth goes 6 innings while allowing 5 runs on 9 hits for the Skyhawks. Dittfurth is charged with the loss brining his record to 0-2. Dustin Nielsen pitched 6 innings of 1 hit baseball while allowing 1 run, 0 earned, as he improved his record to 2-0. The Skyhawks fall to 1-9 while the Grays improve to 7-3 in the 2007. The Skyhawks hand the ball to Edisbel Benitez as they host the struggling New Haven Cutters on Monday night. The Grays travel to Quebec and send Danne Miller to the mound as they look to climb the Can-Am League standings.
