Tomshaw Reaches Milestone in Loss to Biscuits

July 28, 2019 - Southern League (SL1)
Birmingham Barons News Release

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Despite a quality start from Matt Tomshaw in which he reached a professional milestone, the Birmingham Barons (20-14, 47-56) fell to the Montgomery Biscuits (26-11, 70-37) by a 2-0 final Sunday night at Riverwalk Stadium.

Tomshaw, who recorded his 1,000th inning of work as a professional with the first out in the bottom of the fourth inning, collected his fourth consecutive quality outing. The veteran left-hander tossed seven innings of two-run ball and allowed just five hits while striking out eight.

The former 42nd-round selection out of Jacksonville University has spent nine years in professional baseball, including the past two with the Barons. He became the Southern League's modern-day (since 2005) innings pitched leader July 18.

Tomshaw (L, 4-5) suffered a tough loss as the Barons struggled to solve Biscuits starter Josh Fleming (W, 10-4), who surrendered just three hits and recorded his second consecutive complete game.

Luis Gonzalez, Joel Booker and Alfredo Gonzalez recorded the three base knocks for Birmingham, all of which came in separate innings.

The Biscuits opened up scoring in the fourth when Tristan Gray took Tomshaw deep to right for a solo shot. Montgomery extended its advantage to 2-0 in the sixth via a sacrifice fly off the bat of Josh Lowe.

Vince Arobio logged one scoreless frame out of the bullpen and struck out a pair to keep the Barons within striking distance late in the game. However, Fleming sent them down in order in the ninth to seal the Biscuits' eighth straight win.

Birmingham and Montgomery will continue their five-game series Monday night as the Barons send left-hander John Parke (2-1, 3.09) to the mound against Biscuits right-hander Paul Campbell (6-2, 2.72).

First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. at Riverwalk Stadium and the game will be broadcast via WJQX-FM 100.5.
