MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Josh Fleming (10-4) threw his second-consecutive nine-inning complete game and shut out the Birmingham Barons (47-56), 2-0, handing the Biscuits (70-37) their season-high eighth-straight victory on Sunday night at Riverwalk Stadium.
Fleming, who threw a nine-inning complete game in his most recent start prior to Sunday on Tuesday in a 2-1 win away at Tennessee, needed just 88 pitches-61 of them strikes-to accomplish the feat for a second time in under a week, flummoxing Barons hitters with his stuff and high tempo all evening. The lefty went nine innings and allowed no runs on just three hits, one walk, and six strikeouts, notching his fifth win over his last six appearances.
Fleming's counterpart, Matt Tomshaw (4-5), was sharp early on, too, and kept the Biscuits off the board through the first three innings. The southpaw then reached 1,000 innings as a minor league pitcher with a strikeout of Josh Lowe in the fourth, before Tristan Gray launched his ninth home run of the season to right one batter later, providing the Biscuits with the only run they would need.
Lowe added a sac fly in the sixth after a Taylor Walls triple to double that lead to 2-0, and Fleming took care of the rest, carving up the Barons lineup with his battery mate Brett Sullivan for a second-straight outing, which proved to be the Biscuits' Southern League-leading 17th shutout of 2019.
The Biscuits will try to make it nine wins in a row on Monday night when Paul Campbell (6-2) takes on John Parke (2-1) at 6:35 PM CT.
