Smokies Push Two Across in Extras for Wild 4-3 Win

CHATTANOOGA, TN - The Tennessee Smokies (45-61, 12-25) snatched another game against the Chattanooga Lookouts (46-59, 10-26) with a 4-3 win in ten innings at AT&T Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Lookouts grabbed their first lead of the series with an early run in the first inning. Calten Daal energized the inning with a single for the first hit of the ballgame and reached second on an error from Roberto Caro. On the next at-bat, Taylor Trammell ripped a single to give Chattanooga a 1-0 lead.

That lead would only last for 11 brief minutes. In the second frame, Gioskar Amaya reached on a walk from Lookouts starter LHP Scott Moss. Christian Donahue followed with a two run blast over the wall to hand the Smokies a 2-1 lead. It was Donahue's third home run of the season and the Smokies third in two games.

Smokies starter RHP Cory Abbott worked out of a jam in the third. With bases loaded for the lookouts on a trio of walks, Chris Okey popped up behind the plate to Jhonny Pereda to end the inning. On the afternoon, Abbott gave up just one unearned run on only two hits with seven strikeouts in five innings. It was the 11th time this season Abbott tossed six or more strikeouts and 15th time he allowed less than three runs.

RHP Jake Stinnett followed out of the bullpen in the sixth and was not able to hold the lead. He walked both Gavin LaValley and Jonathan India to put a runner in scoring position. With two outs, Brantley Bell singled on a groundball to left field to score LaValley and knot the game up at two apiece.

Manuel Rondon (W, 3-3) continued his dominate stretch since rejoining the Smokies on 7/15. He tossed scoreless eighth and ninth innings to hold the tie and send the game into extras. Rondon has still yet to give up a run in July in 7.2 innings on the mound.

The Smokies went ahead in the tenth thanks to a pair of wild pitches. Zach Davis reached on a fielders choice sacrifice bunt and then trotted to second on LHP Juan Martinez's (L, 2-3) first wild pitch of the inning. His second, combined with a throwing error from Okey, plated both Donahue and Davis to give the Smokies a 4-2 lead.

Chattanooga threatened in the bottom of the inning thanks to an RBI-single from Stuart Fairchild to make the score 4-3. With the tying run on third, LHP Jordan Minch (S, 3) closed out the inning and sealed a game two win for the Smokies.

The Smokies take on the Lookouts once again for game three of the series on Monday night. RHP Thomas Hatch (4-10, 4.66) makes his team leading 21st start of the season for the Smokies, while LHP Packy Naughton (5-7, 3.12) will get the ball for Chattanooga. First pitch is set for 7:15 EDT.
