Youngstown Phantoms News Release
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Phantoms defenseman Tommy Parran has been named the USHL CCM Defenseman of the Week, the USHL announced today.
Parran, 18, earns the award on the heels of a three-goal weekend that saw him record his first career USHL goal, his first career USHL two-goal game, and his first career USHL shorthanded goal.
"It's great to see [Tommy] get on the scoreboard like that, and it's great for our 'D' corps as well," said Phantoms Head Coach & General Manage Anthony Noreen, referencing the defenseman's late draft position as evidence of his progression.
"For Tommy Parran to come as far as he's come, to making this team this year, to getting a college commitment to Brown, and working his way up to the top of our 'D' corps, it speaks volumes about him, his character, what type of work ethic he has, and the type of work he's put in. He deserves an award like this."
Parran scored two goals against Waterloo last Friday, and added a third while shorthanded against Muskegon on Saturday.
"I can't really take the credit [for the award], because I didn't do it," laughed Parran. "My teammates made some unbelievable plays. [Zach Evancho] slid it though a guy's feet, [Kyle] Mackey made a great cross corner dump that I pinched in on, and on Saturday night, [Josh] Melnick shot far pad and I was just following up as a trailer after Stork drove the net. They were all just hard plays."
The award is especially meaningful for Parran because of the road he has traveled to become a key contributor on the Phantoms' blue line. Parran was the Phantoms' last selection in the 2012 USHL Phase 2 draft. He was selected in the 21st round (309th overall), but has since earned a college scholarship to Brown University, an Ivy League institution.
"I've come a long way," said Parran. "I didn't make the team [in my draft year]-I came back to majors, and worked really hard to make it the next year, and I started as last on the depth chart. I made it my goal to work my way up the ranks. Finally, to get here, after getting my commitment to Brown, it's pretty satisfactory. There aren't many feelings that rival it."
Parran becomes the third Phantom to earn a Player of the Week honor this season, joining Kyle Connor, who split the CCM Forward of the Week award just last week, and JJ Piccinich, who won Forward of the Week for September 30-October 6.
