Tommy McNamara Launches Auction to Support Lung Cancer Research During Lung Cancer Awareness Month this November

New England Revolution News Release
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - In support of Lung Cancer Awareness Month this November, New England Revolution midfielder Tommy McNamara today launched an auction of sports and soccer memorabilia, from which 100 percent of the proceeds will be donated to the Lung Cancer Research Foundation (LCRF).
McNamara's auction supporting the LCRF began today, November 9 and will remain open through Friday, November 18. Click here to view the auction on the web. For mobile users, click here. A video message from McNamara and high-resolution images of the auction items are available here.
McNamara, a 10-year MLS veteran whose career has spanned time with the Revolution, New York City FC, and Houston Dynamo FC, plus four collegiate seasons at Brown University, was inspired to support lung cancer research efforts by his mother's own fight against the disease. His mother was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in 2021.
"Most of us have seen cancer impact our lives and families in some way, but you are never quite prepared to hear that diagnosis for someone you love. The news really shook my family to our core. I finally understood the fear and uncertainty that so many families face in those moments," said McNamara. "A lung cancer diagnosis can be even more shocking when the person has never smoked a day in their life, like my mother, but I was surprised to learn that is true for 20 percent of all lung cancer diagnoses. That fact is part of what motivated me to help spread the message that this can truly happen to anyone, and it is up to all of us collectively to act and find a cure.
"Fortunately, my mother's treatment plan is working successfully and she is now able to lead a mostly normal life with manageable side effects," McNamara added. "However, I know so many are not as lucky, and nearly half of all lung cancer cases can be fatal, but I believe that with our support, one day that will change. This November, I hope you will join me in supporting the Lung Cancer Research Foundation and their incredible work fighting this disease."
The auction features a wide array of signed and game-used memorabilia from McNamara himself, the New England Revolution, and players from around Major League Soccer. In addition to bidding on the auction items, supporters have the option to make a cash donation to the LCRF.
Featured auction items include:
- New England Revolution VIP training visit including a meal with the team
- Revolution matchday experience at Gillette Stadium
- 2022 New England Revolution team-signed jersey and soccer ball
- Tommy McNamara autographed jersey, training tops, and game-worn cleats

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women in the United States. More than 200,000 people each year are diagnosed with lung cancer, while more than half - an average of 142,000 people annually - die from the disease. Most people with lung cancer do not have symptoms until the cancer is advanced, underlying the importance of early detection and prevention. Most lung cancer cases are caused by smoking, and quitting can be the most important first step to prevention.
