Johnstown Tomahawks News Release

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. "" The Johnstown Tomahawks defeated the Michigan Warriors 5-0 in a physical battle at the Cambria County War Memorial Friday, giving Johnstown goalie Alex Okicki his fourth shutout of the season.

Johnstown opened the scoring at 10:37 of the first period, when Shane Bednard found winger Matt Meier alone in front of Michigan goaltender Trevor Gorsuch. Meier quickly slammed the puck into the back of the net for his 15th of the year, with Bednard claiming the only assist.

Johnstown struck again just over seven minutes later when the same line of Bednard, Meier and Josh Bowes increased the Tomahawks lead to two. Gorsuch could not control Bednard's shot, and the rebound found the stick of Bowes, who jammed the puck past the Michigan goaltender for his fifth goal of the year.

Johnstown doubled their lead to 4-0 in the second period with a pair of goals from defensemen Dakoda Menslage and Logan Hudson. Working on the powerplay, Menslage rifled a slap shot from the point at 6:29 of the period for his fourth of the season, assisted by Cody Bentzel and Casey Linkenheld. Hudon's goal followed at 13:03, when he pulled in pass from center Tommy Hall and released a slapshot the caught Gorsuch by surprise. It was Hudson's second goal of the year, with assists from Hall and Joe Drabin.

Johnstown's final goal game at 9:08 of the third period when Jordan Watt fought through a scrum in front of the net to find the loose puck in time to whip it past Gorsuch. The goal "" credited originally to Casey Linkenheld "" was Watt's 11th of the season. Josh Bowes also assisted.

The final score made the game appear more lopsided than it truly was, as Michigan battled hard throughout the game, nearly matching Johnstown's 34 shots with 30 of their own. Johnstown was one-for-six on the powerplay, while Michigan was scoreless in six powerplay opportunities.

The win moved Johnstown to 24-19-3 (51 points), within four points of the second-place Warriors (23-13-8, 54 points). The teams battle again tomorrow night at the War Memorial to complete the weekend series with a 7 p.m. face-off.
