Toledo Mud Hens News Release
Toledo, Ohio - The Toledo Mud Hens faced off with the Indianapolis Indians on Thursday for 17th time this season with the Indians' winning by a score of 11-5.
Indianapolis utilizes 18 hits including back-to-back four run innings in the fifth and sixth to best Toledo in the series finale, despite Ronny Rodriguez knocking a home run for the fourth consecutive game, tallying a long ball in each of the four home games during this homestand.
The first score of the game came in the top of the second. Hitting from the five spot for Indianapolis, Kevin Kramer sent a ball into the cloudless Toledo sky for his tenth homerun of the season and his second in as many games for his 50th RBI of the year to give the Indians a 1-0 lead.
The Indians increased their lead in the third inning. Ke'Bryan Hayes doubled to straight away center to trade places with Jake Elmore, who had previously doubled off the left field wall, pushing the score to 2-0 Indianapolis. The double served as Hayes' second hit of the night after he singled in his first plate appearance.
Toledo answered in the bottom half of the third to tie the game. Josh Harrison drew a walk for the second time of the night, setting up a Dawel Lugo RBI triple with two outs. Jacob Robson followed up with a bunt single to score Lugo, moving the score to 2-2 after three.
As for the defensive side, Willi Castro flashed the leather early and often. After snagging a ball in the hole during the first inning, Castro did the same in the fourth, this time saving at least one run to keep the game tied.
The tie would stand until the top of the fifth. Will Craig came to the plate for Indianapolis with two on and no outs, ripping a double down the left field line to score both runners. Craig moved up to third on a groundball before Trayvon Robinson homered to left-center to give the Indians a 6-2 lead.
Ryan Carpenter exited the game prior to the start of the sixth inning for Toledo. In the start, Carpenter went five innings, giving up 11 hits resulting in six runs while striking out four. Jose Manuel Fernandez was the pitcher to relieve him with Kade Scivicque also entering the game behind the plate.
Indianapolis increased their lead in the top of the sixth with Christian Kelley leading off with a solo knock to left field. Four of the next six batters would single for the Indians with Robinson picking up two more RBI as the fourth single, plating Cole Tucker and Hayes. Another single, this one off the bat of Jason Martin, would score Craig as well to give the Indians a 10-2 lead.
In the bottom half of the sixth Scivicque entered the box for his first at-bat of the game, sending a triple to the right-center gap scoring Frank Schwindel and Mikie Mahtook to cut into the Indianapolis lead.
Toledo would make another pitching change heading into the seventh inning. Trent Szkutnik took the mound after Fernandez went one inning, allowing four runs on six hits, one walk and one strikeout.
After a one-two-three inning from Szkutnik, Ronny Rodriguez sent a ball that cleared the scoreboard in left for a home run, his fourth consecutive game hitting a long ball, to move the score to 10-5.
Indianapolis added another run in the top of the ninth. With the bases loaded, Hayes flew out to right field to score Hunter Owen to push the Indians' lead to 11-5.
