Halifax Mooseheads News Release
Halifax, Nova Scotia - Once again, the Halifax Mooseheads found a way to get it done. In a game that wasn't their prettiest effort of the season, Halifax picked up a 3-2 win over the visiting Saint John Sea Dogs on Friday after Jake Todd scored the go-ahead goal late in regulation time.
The Herd have secured points in 11 of their last 12 games and have surged to 32-12-7-1 on the season. They continue to lead the Maritimes Division with 72 points which is 10 more than second place Moncton.
It was a nail-biter in the final period thanks to a pair of Saint John goals to give the Dogs a surprising 2-1 lead. The visitors had only fired 11 shots on goal through 40 minutes and were trailing 1-0 thanks to a first period power play goal from Halifax's Jan Sprynar. Saint John didn't allow much in terms of great scoring chances by the Mooseheads and goalie Patrick Leaver gave his team a shot at the victory by making 31 saves.
Fortunately, the Thursday night crowd inside Scotiabank Centre finally got something to cheer for when Peter Reynolds scored a big goal against his former team with a one-timer on the man advantage to tie it 2-2 with just over five minutes remaining. Todd followed it up 1:39 later when he stuffed one in from the side of the net to regain the lead once and for all. The sequence started with another hard Sprynar shot that felled a Sea Dogs defenceman in front of the net and the Moose took advantage of the ensuing chaos in front of Leaver. Saint John had a chance to tie the game when they received a power play with 27 seconds remaining and also pulled their goalie for six attackers versus four, but the Moose were able to clear the puck on multiple occasions to grab the home ice win.
Mathis Rousseau made 25 saves and earned his 23rd win of the season. Jake Furlong, Brady Schultz, Owen Phillips, Liam Kilfoil, Markus Vidicek and Sprynar all contributed assists in the game. Sprynar was named the first star with two points.
Reynolds was playing in his first game since going down with an upper body injury on January 28th against the Eagles. He missed the entire three-game road trip last week. Braeden MacPhee sat out for the second straight game with an upper body injury and is expected to miss another week of action. Jordan Dumais remains out indefinitely with a timeline to return of approximately three weeks following lower abdominal surgery.
Next up for Halifax is a home contest against the Charlottetown Islanders on Saturday night. Tickets are on sale now at Ticketmaster.ca.
