Tobs Win CPL Opener

May 26, 2015 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilson Tobs News Release

WILSON, N.C., May 26, 2015 - The Tobs start 2015 league play strong in Tuesday night's matchup against the Peninsula Pilots at Fleming Stadium with a 5-3 win.

The game was a dead-locked pitchers dual through the third inning, until Tobs shortstop Chris Clare hit a home run over the centerfield wall to get the Tobs rolling.

But the lead was short-lived, as the Pilots came back with a sac fly to tie the game up at one run a piece.

In quite possibly the biggest inning of the game, right-handed pitcher, Kevin Marnon, came on to the mound for the Tobs and struck out all three batters he faced. In the bottom of the inning, Clark Scolamiero started a bases-loaded, 2-out rally, with a 2-RBI base hit. Collin Thacker followed Scolamiero's hit with one of his own, finding the five-six gap to bring in another run for the Tobs. A passed ball from the Pilot's catcher, Jack Picciotti, aided in the rally effort, allowing the Tobs to take a 5-3 lead at the end of the seventh inning.

But the Pilots weren't ready to back down yet, as they brought back two runs after Greg Mason took the mound for the Tobs in the eighth inning. A 2014 CPL All-Star, Brock Goodling, replaced Mason on the mound and held the score to 5-3.

To end the game, Webster drove a hard hit ball to the centerfield wall for the Tob's first triple of the season in the bottom of the eighth inning. Collin Thacker sealed the game by catching a routine fly ball out in right field.

The Wilson Tobs defeated the Peninsula Pilots, 5-3. Brock Goodling is awarded the save, and Kevin Marnon will take home the win.

Tomorrow, Wednesday, May 27th, the Tobs will travel to Petersburg to face the Generals. The next Tobs home game will be on Thursday, May 28th against Petersburg.
