
Edenton Spoils Opening Night in Wilmington

In the first game of the 2015 summer collegiate season, the Edenton Steamers were came out victorious by a score of 5-2, using 12 hits and 4 Wilmington errors in the process. Edenton starting pitcher David Bednar had a remarkable outing, going a strong 6 innings, allowing 5 hits and 1 run, while striking out 9 Sharks batters.
Edenton was able to strike first in the top of the 1st inning when leadoff Evan Rogers doubled and would come around to score on Mick Fennell's single. Edenton would hold the 1-0 advantage until Wilmington could respond in the 3rd.
Speedy left-fielder Andrew Seigel knocked a 1-out double and was able to use his quickness to steal third base a few pitches later. After leadoff Brett Smith would draw a walk, John Fallon made solid contact to pick up an RBI single, easily scoring Seigel. Seigel would finish the contest 2-3 with a stolen base.
Edenton would regain the lead and go up 5-1 following a few defensive mishaps by the home team. Michael Castellani replaced Sharks starter Hunter Smith in the fourth when Edenton second-baseman Chad Sedio lead off with a single. Desten Nichols would tag one to right - Sharks right-fielder Hayes Nelson mistimed his dive and the ball hopped over his head and headed towards the fence. Another error would be committed in the inning to allow Edenton to pick up two more runs.
Hunter Smith, a Sharks player for the third consecutive summer, was given the starting nod by Coach Parker Bangs. Smith provided 3 innings of work, allowing 4 hits, striking out 2 while allowing a single run.
Sharks would pick up a run in the 9th following a pinch-hit walk by Mark Gonzalez and a pinch-hit RBI single by Nick Rotola.
The Wilmington Sharks will enjoy a day off tomorrow before picking up the bats again Thursday evening as they host the Morehead City Marlins. As always, Sharks fans can enjoy cold draft beers for just $1.
