Marlins Win Season Opener 7-4
May 26, 2015 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Morehead City Marlins News Release
The Morehead City Marlins flashed the leather in the game's biggest moment, preserving a 7-4 win, opening the Coastal Plain League regular season undefeated.
Leading by three heading into the final frame, closer Tyler Gunnin (West Georgia) loaded the bases with just one out. But then, second baseman Jack Sherrill (Mt. Olive) turned a sharp 4-3 double play to close out the ball game. The dramatic victory marks the first career win for Jason Wood as head coach of the Marlins (1-0), avenging last year's season-opening loss.
The SwampDogs (0-1) jumped out to an early 3-0 lead against starter Andrew Burnick (Penn) in the second, who went four innings of work allowing those three runs.
But when it mattered most, just after the SwampDogs had tied the score against Brice Harrison (North Gerogia) in the 7th inning, the bats responded. The Marlins quickly threatened with the bases loaded and Spenser McGhee (Chowan University) delivered the game-winning hit, a two RBI single up the middle, his lone base knock of the evening.
Hits were slim for the offense tonight, collecting just two in the first six innings, but they scratched and clawed into four runs during that frame. Kick started by a leadoff single from Christian Campbell (Rutgers), the Marlins took advantage of a wild throw from the SwampDogs scoring both Campbell and Stephen Wallace for an initial 4-2 lead.
Dominick Cammarata (Tennessee) and Keyshawn D'Orso (Norfolk) each scored twice for the Marlins, who collected five hits in total. The night was almost headlined by missed opportunities after the Marlins loaded the bases in the 2nd, leaving them loaded after a fielder's choice groundout from Sherrill. They stranded seven runners in all, compared to 10 runners left on base for Fayetteville.
The Marlins now return home for the much-anticipated home opener against the Forest City Owls, who had their game suspended in the 4th inning due to heavy rain. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. at Big Rock Stadium and you can follow the action live on our twitter account: @mcmarlins or online through the Coastal Plain League Webpass with Evan Budrovich on the call.
