Lexington County Blowfish News Release
Florence, S.C. (May 26, 2015) -The Lexington County Blowfish capitalized on four Florence Redwolves errors, and received outstanding pitching from Taylor Widener, en route to a 5-1 victory on Tuesday night.
Widener's five solid innings paced the Blowfish to the victory. He allowed two hits, striking out six, and in the process, flummoxing the Redwolves bats all night. Relievers Erik Davis and Avery Greer struck out a combined eight batters to stonewall the Florence lineup, and close the night out on the right foot.
Greer finished the game in style, striking out Florence DH Colin Ford to complete the victory. Blowfish pitching held the Redwolves to just two hits all night.
"I was excited to see our pitchers go out on the mound and compete," head coach Jonathan Johnson said after the game. "They did a great job throwing strikes, getting outs, and putting hitters away."
"If our pitchers throw the way they did tonight, we're going to win a lot of ball games."
The Blowfish did not wait long to strike in the season opener. After Michael Bell led the game off with a walk, he advanced on a wild pitch, and then stole third. Madison Stokes drove him in with an RBI groundout to jump out to a 1-0 lead after the first inning.
And, while they led 2-0 after two innings of play, it took until the third inning for the Blowfish to get their first hit of the season. Austin Garcia knocked a line-drive single into right field. Trevor Bradley followed that up with a single of his own, putting runners on the corners with two outs, but were unable to push a run home.
The Blowfish had other opportunities to score, leaving seven runners on base. They would never relinquish the lead they forged early, however. RBI groundouts from Stokes, Mitchell Price, and a fielder's choice from Bell proved to be exactly what the Blowfish needed at critical times.
"We put the ball in play when we needed to. Timely hitting and good base-running put across a couple runs," Johnson added.
Florence scored their only run of the game in the fifth inning. Redwolves catcher Ray Lanners doubled down the right field line to the start the inning. A fielding error with two outs pushed Lanners in to score to make it 5-1.
The Blowfish will now return home for seven of the next nine games.
The Blowfish will open the brand-new Lexington County Baseball Stadium, hosting the Gastonia Grizzlies on Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. Limited tickets remain for the historic home opener.
