Wilson Tobs News Release
WILSON, N.C. (June 5, 2011) - The bats finally came alive at Fleming Stadium for the Tobs for the first time this season, as Wilson took advantage of seven errors commited by the Fuquay-Varina Twins on Sunday evening to win their first of two exhibition games in 2011, 9-2.
The Tobs got down early in the first when 2B Paco Martin and RF Jerry Glover had back-to-back singles to lead off the game for Fuquay-Varina. After a wild pitch put both runners in scoring position, they were each brought home with RBI groundouts, making the score 2-0 Twins at the end of the top of the first.
After being put down in order in the home half of the first, Wilson's bats awoke in the second. DH Jeff Kremer led off with a walk, and 1B Steve Nikorak followed with a single. Then a couple of errors by 3B D. J. Dover allowed Kremer to score, Nikorak to head to third, and 2B Chris Rawlings to get aboard. This brought 3B Brandon Elliot to the plate, and he doubled to drive in both base runners and put the Tobs ahead for good, 3-2.
Wilson added to its lead with one in the third and four in the sixth. Delivering the biggest blow of the sixth inning was C Keith Morrisroe, who drove in two with a single. The Tobs ended up with nine runs on eight hits, while Fuquay-Varina finished with two runs on five hits.
Getting the win for Wilson was RHP Craig Goodman, who went six innings and gave up both runs on all five hits. The Tobs used three other pitchers, who each pitched one inning and did not give up any hits or runs. Michael Griffin took the loss for the Twins. He allowed four runs (two earned) on three hits, and walked five while striking out two.
The Tobs return to Coastal Plain League action tomorrow when they head to the Outer Banks to take on the Outer Banks Daredevils for the first time this season. First pitch is at 7:05 p.m. On the hill for Wilson will be RHP Steve Nikorak (0-1), making his second start of the season. The next Tobs home game will be Wednesday, June 8 at 7:05pm against the Morehead City Marlins. For tickets call the Tobs box office at 252-291-TOBS.
