Morehead City Marlins News Release

Morehead City, N.C. - After coming up on the short end of a heartbreaker in Fayetteville last night, the Marlins lost another competitive game to the SwampDogs at Big Rock Stadium on Sunday night by the score of 4-1. Fayetteville remains the only undefeated team in the Coastal Plain League, while the Marlins are now 2-5 on the adolescent season.

Despite the loss, the Marlins saw an impressive first outing from University of Houston freshman Chase Wellbrock, who threw 4.2 innings and punched out six Fayetteville batters all while displaying an effective arsenal of pitches.

The difference in the game came to be a two-run home run blasted by SwampDogs catcher Zach Briggs in the top of the seventh inninghis first hit of the season. That broke the tie, making it a 3-1 game.

Another player that seemed to hold the game in the palm of his hand was Fayetteville's Nick Crucet. The `Dogs outfielder walked three times, stole three bases and came around to score twice. Crucet scored in the top of the ninth after walking on a full count and snatching both second and third. That gave closer Cody Davis a 4-1 lead with which to pitch for his second consecutive save against the Marlins.

The Marlins begin a three day road trip on Monday, during which they will play at Peninsula, Petersburg, and Wilson. The next Marlins home game will take place on Thursday, as the Fayetteville SwampDogs travel back to "The Rock" for the second time in a five day span. Gates open at 6 p.m. for the Thirsty Thursday game, sponsored by Pepsi. There will also be a Marlins seat cushion giveaway, brought to you by Time Warner Cable.
