Zach Briggs Two-Run Homerun Propels Fayetteville to Victory

June 5, 2011 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Fayetteville SwampDogs News Release

MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - Zach Briggs hit a two-run homerun in the seventh inning, and the SwampDogs remained the lone unbeaten team in the Coastal Plain League with their 4-1 victory over the Morehead City Marlins on Sunday at Puck O'Neal Field.

Once again, the bullpen also shined brightly for Fayetteville (5-0), as Derek Brooks, Cory Kent, and Cody Davis combined to throw four scoreless innings of relief. Brooks (2-0) picked up the win, while Davis earned his second save of the season.

Both teams got solid starting pitching, with SwampDogs starter Brandon Browne allowing just three hits while striking out five in five innings. Chase Wellbrock, making his debut for Morehead City (2-5), also pitched well, striking out six while allowing just four hits in his 4.2 innings of work.

Both pitchers exited with the score tied at 1, leaving the game to the bullpens. After a one-out walk to Nick Crucet in the seventh inning, Marlins reliever Kyle Wigmore surrendered the Briggs homerun, which was all the SwampDogs would need.

Crucet's impact at the plate spanned the entire game, as the SwampDogs leftfielder walked three times, scored two runs, and stole three bases. Davis continued his hot play with the bat, scoring the first run of the game while going 2-for-3 with a walk, while Billy Urban and Dillon Checkal each delivered RBI hits.

The SwampDogs return home to J.P. Riddle Stadium on Monday night for their third meeting of the year with the Wilmington Sharks. Gates open at 6 p.m., with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m.
