Morehead City Marlins News Release
Morehead City, N.C. - The Fayetteville SwampDogs retained their undefeated status after rallying for two runs each in the fifth and seventh innings, defeating the Morehead City Marlins 6-5 at J. P. Riddle Stadium on Saturday night.
Fayetteville's Cody Davis had the crowd of over 3,000 cheering from the start of the matchup to its exciting finish-literally. Playing centerfield and hitting in the leadoff spot, Davis slugged a home run in his team's first at-bat, spotting his âDogs a 1-0 advantage. Nine innings later, the righty from the University of Tampa delivered the final pitch of the game. Fayetteville turned a double play and took home the 6-5 victory.
Adam Norton (0-1) of Notre Dame struggled in his Marlins debut, giving up two runs on three hits in his two-inning effort. However, the right-hander fanned three SwampDog batters.
The Marlins offense was scattered, yet cluttered. All six Morehead City hits were recorded by six different players, but first baseman Zach Stephens used his to smack a grand slam and drive in four of the Marlins' five runs in the top of the fifth inning.
The Marlins descend to a 2-4 record on the season, while the âDogs continue an unstained campaign as they've still not lost (4-0). The teams will complete their home-and-away series at Big Rock Stadium on Sunday, as the first pitch in Morehead City is set for 7:05 p.m.
