Wilson Tobs News Release
HAMPTON, VA - The Wilson Tobs (2-8) put eight runs across the board in the top of the ninth inning to earn their first come-from-behind victory of the season, 10-3, over the Peninsula Pilots (7-3) at War Memorial Stadium on Friday night in Hampton, Virginia. The win snapped a seven game losing streak for the Tobs, the longest since another seven game losing streak in 2007.
The eight-run ninth inning was highlighted by a bases clearing three-run triple hit by DH Tony Wieber. First baseman Steve Nikorak added a two-run homer in the inning, and eight different Tobs ended up crossing the plate.
Despite the final score, the game began as a pitchers duel. Wilson got on the board first in the top of the fourth inning thanks to an RBI single by RF Ryan Daughtry. The single extended Daughtry's season-long hit streak to seven games, and put the Tobs ahead 1-0.
The Pilots answered in the bottom of the sixth. After reaching on a leadoff walk, DH Chas Crane stole both second and third base, and was then brought home on a sacrifice fly off the bat of RF Phil Ruzbarsky to even up the score, 1-1.
In the seventh, Peninsula took its first lead of the game on a single through the right side by CF Jake Atwell that drove home Cameron Cecil. In the next at bat, LHP Brice Rivenbark threw a wild pitch that got away from Tobs catcher Jeff Kremer, allowing another run to score and the Pilots to go ahead 3-1.
Rivenbark was pulled after the wild pitch. He totaled 6 1/3 innings pitched, three runs (two earned) on two hits, seven walks, and six strikeouts. RHP Daniel Brown replaced Rivenbark and went 2/3 of an inning without surrendering a run or a hit. Earning the win for the Tobs was RHP Tyler Saltsman (1-0), who pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth.
Wilson put another run across the board in the top of the eighth on a throwing error by Pilots 1B Jake Cave that allowed Kremer to score from third, tightening the score to 3-2 Pilots.
Peninsula starter RHP Coby Cowgill pitched six innings and gave up one run (unearned) on two hits and two walks while striking out nine. He was replaced by RHP Ryan Berman, who threw 1 1/3 innings, giving up one run on two hits. RHP Max Almonte (0-1) took the loss as he was tagged for all eight runs in the ninth.
The Tobs and Pilots will meet again tomorrow night at Fleming Stadium in Wilson. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm and the Tobs welcome all boy scouts to enjoy the game at a discounted price as part of scout night at the park. On the hill for Wilson will be RHP Craig Goodman (0-0), making his first Coastal Plain League start of the season. RHP Austin Chrismon (East Carolina University) will be on the hill for the Pilots.
