Titans Fall for First Time at Home, Lose 5-1 to Toledo

Trenton, NJ - The Trenton Titans, proud ECHL of the Philadelphia Flyers, fell for the first time in four games on home ice this season, as the Toledo Walleye played spoiler with a 5-1 win on the Titans Alumni night.

The Walleye (3-2, 6 pts) exacted some revenge on the Titans (5-2, 10 pts) for the previous night's 4-1 loss, also at the Sun National Bank Center in Trenton.

Despite the loss, the Titans maintain a share of the ECHL's Atlantic Division lead with the Elmira Jackals.

Toledo struck first, just five minutes into the contest, when Willie Coatzee was awarded a penalty shot after a short-handed breakaway opportunity. Coatzee made the most of his chance, beating Trenton goaltender Scott Wedgewood (4-2, 31 saves) with a quick backhand-forehand move for the only goal of the opening period.

Neither team could stay out of the box in the second, with the two combining for 10 penalties, five aside, in the middle frame. But the Walleye power play - which entered the game an ECHL-worst at 0-for-15 on the season - pushed the lead to two halfway through the second stanza on their first man-advantage opportunity of the night. Joey Ryan beat Wedgewood up high with a slapshot from the top of the left circle during a 4-on-3 power play.

The Titans opened the third period with time remaining on a five-on-three, but were unable to take advantage of the extra-man opportunity. That inability to score on special teams eventally cost the Titans. Eight minutes into the third, with Wedgewood got caught behind his net on a defensive miscue, Toledo's Luke Glendening grabbed and tucked home a loose puck to put the Walleye up by three. Just seconds later, Max Campbell tipped home a pass from Andrej Nestrasil on a two-on-one break to put the Walleye up 4-0 and dash any hopes of a Trenton comeback.

Titans Captain Ray DiLauro finally solved Petr Mrazek (2-1, 33 saves) in the third, launching a wrist shot through traffic that beat the Toledo netminder up high on the power play for his second goal of the year. In all, the Titans' power play went just 1-for-8 on the night.

Nestrasil (G, A) added an empty netter for the Walleye with five seconds remaining to round out the scoring.

The Walleye outshot Trenton 36-34, and each team scored once on the power play. Toledo went 1-for-4 in comparison to the Titan's 1-for-8 performance. The teams spit the weekend series, and will have to wait until March to settle the score for the season.

After the game, the Titans Pink jerseys, which the team has been sporting at home throughout the month of October, were auctioned off to fans. Proceeds from the auction benefit the Breast Cancer Resource Center in Princeton, NJ.

The Titans are off until Friday, November 2, when they begin a five-game set against the rival Reading Royals. Faceoff for that contest is set for 7:05 p.m. at the Sun National Bank Center.
