Titans Drop Walleye at Home; Sit Atop Atlantic Division at 5-1

October 26, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Titans News Release

Trenton, NJ - The Trenton Titans got back into the win column Friday night, downing the Toledo Walleye at home, 4-1. With the victory, Trenton - proud ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers - takes sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference's Atlantic Division.

Trenton (5-1, 10 points) struck first, as Luke Pither took a feed from Kory Nagy and beat Toledo goalkeeper Kent Simpson (1-1, 22 saves) over his right shoulder from the left face-off dot for his second goal of the season.

Former Titan Randy Rowe pulled The Walleye (2-2, 4 points) even early in the second, putting the rebound of a Kyle Rogers shot past Trenton netminder Scott Wedgewood (4-1, 25 saves).

The teams traded chances for the rest of the relatively quiet second, with neither team able to find the back of the net despite several good chances at either end.

The Titans offense exploded in the third, however. Chris McKelvie - on loan from Albany (AHL) provided the spark, redirecting a Ray DiLauro wrist shot past Simpson just seconds into the period for his first goal of the season.

McKelvie (G, A) then set up teammate Ryan Grimshaw for his first of the year - another seeing-eye wrister through traffic - to give Trenton breathing room.

Jason Akeson added more insurance for the Titans, grabbing a loose puck in the slot, spinning and beating Simpson up high to make it 4-1 with just minutes to play.

It proved to be more than enough help for Wedgewood, as the Brampton, Ontario, native shut out the Walleye for the rest of the contest, including coming up with several stellar saves on point-blank chances in the third period. Wedgewood earned "First Ace" honors for his performance.

The two teams tied in shots, 26-26, and neither club was able to take advantage of their special teams opportunities, both going 0-for-3 on the man-advantage.

The Walleye won't have to wait long for a shot at revenge, as the teams square off again tomorrow night at the Sun National Bank Center. Titans alumni, including Scott Bertoli, Mark Murphy, and others will be on hand for the contest. Fans have a chance to watch the game with their favorite Titans Alum by ordering tickets at 609-341-1100, online at TrentonTitansHockey.com, or by visiting the Sun National Bank Center box office on game day. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
