Everett Silvertips News Release
EVERETT, WA - The Everett Silvertips erased a two-goal deficit in regulation and came up big in the shootout to defeat the Vancouver Giants 4-3 Saturday night at Comcast Arena. Everett finishes the season series with two straight wins over the Giants after earning just their second shootout victory of the year in ten tries.
Jordyn Boyd scored back-to-back goals in the second period to draw the 'Tips even after Vancouver had built a 3-1 lead, giving him three goals in the past two games to double his goal total for the season. Ryan Harrison also lit the lamp for the Silvertips, while Kent Simpson turned aside 39 shots in regulation and overtime before stopping 3 of 4 Giants in the shootout. Kohl Bauml and Ryan Chynoweth notched shootout goals to lift Everett to the victory.
The game began with Vancouver outshooting the 'Tips 6-0, but the got on the board with their first shot of the game. During a 2-on-1 rush into the Vancouver zone, Cody Fowlie made a nice cross ice pass to Harrison who one-timed it in for a 1-0 Silvertips lead. The Giants responded later in the period as a shot by David Musil from the blue line made its way through traffic and past Kent Simpson, tying the game at one. Vancouver added a powerplay goal to take the lead with less than a minute remaining in the period when Jordan Martinook jammed home a rebound in front of the net. The Giants outshot Everett 19-4 in the opening frame.
The Silvertips successfully killed off a penalty early in the second only to have Vancouver score seconds later to extend the lead. Nathan Burns fed the puck out front to Martinook, who scored his second of the night on the play to give the Giants a 3-1 edge. The 'Tips drew back within one minutes later on the powerplay, as Jordyn Boyd stepped into the low circle and snuck a shot under the pads of Giants' goalie Jackson Whistle at 7:34 on Everett's sixth shot of the game. The Silvertips then tied it up with a late goal when Josh Birkholz fed a pass up the ice to Ryan Chynoweth, who hit a streaking Boyd in the slot for a re-direction through Whistle's five-hole to even score at three after 40 minutes with his first career multi-goal game.
The goaltenders kept the score unchanged over the final 20 minutes of regulation and into overtime, with Everett missing on one powerplay but killing off two opportunities for Vancouver. As the game progressed into a shootout, Brendan Gallagher scored in round two to give the Giants a 1-0 lead. Needing a goal to keep the 'Tips alive, Kohl Bauml squeezed a shot between Whistle's pads to even the score through three rounds. Ryan Chynoweth made a crafty move as Everett's fourth shooter, spinning around in front before depositing a backhander to put the Silvertips ahead. Kent Simpson then stopped Matt Bellerive to end the game and lift the 'Tips to the 4-3 victory.
Simpson (14-26-1-5) won for the sixth time in his last eight starts with the 43-save effort as the Silvertips were outshot 42-20. Jackson Whistle (1-7-0-2) suffered his second shootout loss of the year after stopping 16 shots. Both clubs converted one of four powerplay opportunities for the night.
The Silvertips will now hit the road for three straight games, starting with visits to Tri-City on Tuesday and Friday and concluding Saturday at Seattle. The 'Tips will then return home to open a seven-game homestand Sunday with a 5:05 pm afternoon game against the Portland Winterhawks.
