TinCaps Outlast Silver Hawks, 8-6

SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The TinCaps blew a 5-1 lead, but beat the South Bend Silver Hawks, 8-6 in 12 innings at Coveleski Stadium. Danny Payne's sacrifice fly plated the go-ahead run.

Fort Wayne took a 5-1 lead into the bottom of the 5th inning, but South Bend scored four unanswered runs in the 6th and 7th to tie it up.

The TinCaps scored again in the top of the 8th when Jeudy Valdez pounded an RBI double into the gap in right-center to plate Dean Anna and put Fort Wayne ahead, 6-5.

South Bend scraped together the tying run in the bottom of the 8th when Tyson Van Winkle lined a two-out single in front of a diving center fielder to deadlock the game at 6-6.

The game remained tied until the 12th , when Griffin Benedict ripped a leadoff single. Anna drew his third walk of the night, then a wild pitch moved pinch runner Wande Olabisi and Anna to third and second, respectively. Payne lifted a go-ahead sac fly to right, then another wild pitch allowed Anna to score an insurance run.

RHP Nick Schumacher came in and slammed the door to snag his sixth save of the year. RHP Miles Mikolas (1-1) was the winning pitcher while Silver Hawks RHP Yonata Ortega (1-2) was the loser.

The TinCaps upped their record to 17-21, passing the Silver Hawks (17-22) in the standings.

The TinCaps and Silver Hawks (Class-A Arizona Diamondbacks) continue the three-game set Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Coveleski Stadium. Fort Wayne RHP Daniel Sarria (0-0) draws the start against Silver Hawks RHP Scott Allen (0-0).
