LAST SERIES: At home, the TinCaps took 3 of 5 against the Lake County Captains. After falling in the first 2 games, with a pair of rainouts in between, the 'Caps rallied to sweep a doubleheader Saturday and then, despite trailing 7-2 with 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th Sunday, came back to win, 8-7.
JACKIE ROBINSON DAY: On April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson broke baseball's color barrier when he made his historic MLB debut. Every year on April 15, baseball honors Jackie's legacy by celebrating his life, values and accomplishments. The extensive and unified League-wide show of support has included retiring Jackie's number throughout the Majors in 1997; dedicating April 15 as Jackie Robinson Day each year since 2004; and requesting that every MLB player and all on-field personnel wear his No. 42 during games scheduled on Jackie Robinson Day since 2009. Log on to JackieRobinson.org and mlbtogether.com/42 to learn more... Robinson visited Fort Wayne several times, including July 31, 1962 for Wildcat Little League's "Progress Day," along with former Dodgers All-Star Carl Erskine and Hall of Famers Bob Feller and Ted Williams. A photo of the gentlemen at McMillen Park is featured in Parkview Field's Suite Level Lounge.
CARL ERSKINE: An Anderson, Indiana, native passed away today at the age of 97. As a right-handed pitcher, he won a World Series with Brooklyn in 1955 and threw 2 no-hitters during his 12-year big league career... He visited Parkview Field in 2013 and '14, performing the national anthem and "Take Me Out to the Ball Game" on his harmonica... Erskine also has an important legacy as a champion for the disabled and Special Olympics.
ON THIS DAY: In 2009, Parkview Field hosted its first ever game. Coincidentally, the TinCaps hosted the Dragons. On a picture perfect 65-degree Thursday evening, a sell-out crowd of 8,208 packed the ballpark. In many ways, the inaugural game set the stone for a storybook season, and the great success the ballpark has achieved ever since. Third baseman James Darnell hit a 2nd-inning 2-run homer and the 'Caps never looked back on their way to a 7-nothing victory. That year's team went on to a record-setting 94 and 46 record, and ultimately won the Midwest League Championship.
BACK AT PARKVIEW FIELD: On Wednesday, in partnership with the American Red Cross, a blood drive will be held from 9am-2pm in the Diamond Lot.
2023 MEMORIES: In Fort Wayne's first visit to Dayton last year, on May 16, Jairo Iriarte, Alan Mundo, and Adam Smith combined to throw the franchise's 3rd ever no-hitter... Then on the final day of the regular season, Sept. 10, the TinCaps clinched a playoff berth, the club's first since 2017... The TinCaps have 23 players who played for the team prior to this season, including 22 last year.
TOPPS MOMENT: TinCaps Sunday home games feature post-game autographs presented by Midwest Box Breaks. The sports card-trading company also gives away thousands of cards to kids at games. Some of the cards were quite valuable, including a card autographed by Anthony Volpe (Yankees) and an autographed rookie card for Junior Caminero (Rays). This was highlighted on social media by Topps.
NOTABLE NUMBERS: In the MWL, Homer Bush Jr. ranks 2nd in stolen bases (5)... Tyler Robertson ranks 2nd in doubles (4) 5th in SLG (.600), and 8th in OPS (.993)... Griffin Doersching ranks 5th in doubles (3), 9th in H (10), and 10th in SLG (.552).
