Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
CLINTON, Iowa - Using two eighth-inning home runs, the Clinton LumberKings came from behind on Monday night for a 5-3 victory over the Fort Wayne TinCaps. Clinton's Ramon Morla and Guillermo Pimentel went yard off of Fort Wayne's Colin Rea, turning a 3-2 TinCaps lead into a 5-3 LumberKings advantage that would hold through the ninth inning.
For the second consecutive night, Fort Wayne (6-12) raced out to a 3-0 lead at Ashford University Field. In the first inning against Clinton's (7-11) Jordan Shipers, four of the first five batters reached base. Justin Miller led off with a double, and Donavan Tate singled through the right side to send Miller home and make it 1-0 in favor of the TinCaps. Tate stole second, and two batters later Zach Kometani doubled him home, putting Fort Wayne in front 2-0. Kometani moved to third on a single by Duanel Jones, and scored on a Shipers balk.
The 3-0 Fort Wayne lead stood until the third inning. In that frame, Clinton's Jean Acevedo reached on a throwing error by Jones, and scored on a double by Jharmidy De Jesus, making it 3-1.
TinCaps starter Joe Ross worked five innings allowing just one unearned run. He struck out a career-high seven batters, and walked two, which were the first two batters he faced in the game.
In the sixth, Michael Kelly entered from the Fort Wayne bullpen. The righthander allowed one run in that inning, and exited after a scoreless seventh. Colin Rea (0-3) pitched the eighth, which would prove to be the game's most crucial frame. Rea surrendered a solo home run to Morla, and a two-run home run to Pimentel, allowing the LumberKings to jump ahead 5-3.
Fort Wayne mounted a small threat in the ninth, putting runners at first and second, but Casey McElroy grounded out to second to end the ballgame. Clinton righthander Stephen Kohlscheen earned the win in relief.
The series finale is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. Fort Wayne righty Matt Wisler is scheduled to throw against Clinton righthander Brett Shankin. First pitch is scheduled for 1:30 PM.
