Burlington Bees News Release

BURLINGTON, Iowa (4/23/12) - The Burlington Bees didn't hit early, but they hit often and finished the night with an 8-4 victory over the Great Lakes Loons. The Bees have a chance to sweep the Loons in the three game series tomorrow.

The Loons hit Bees starter Jose Macias hard in the first inning and put a run on the board in the top of the first after hitting three straight line drives. But an inning-ending double play stopped the bleeding with runners at the corner and probably went a long way in saving momentum for the Bees.

But Macias struggled in the second inning and gave up two more runs. The hard hitting continued when Noel Cuevas led off the inning with a double. Baldwin would eventually single into right and score Cuevas. The Loons kept hitting with both Kevin Taylor and Jesus Arredondo getting base hits. Baldwin scored on a throwing error from Wade Kirkland to first base.

Macias managed to shake off the first two innings and looked great over the next two. The right-hander pitched a season-high six innings and surrendered nine hits, three walks, four runs (two earned), but also struck out six batters.

The Bees scored their first run when B.A. Vollmuth hit a triple into leftfield that allowed Chad Oberacker to score in the bottom of the third. After three innings, the Bees only had two hits and had given up seven. But the Bees continue to get good production from the second half of the lineup. In the bottom of the fourth the Bees hit three consecutive doubles with two outs to cut into the lead and make it a 3-2 game. Wade Kirkland had one of those doubles and finished the night going 2-4 with one run scored and three RBIs.

In general the middle innings were kind to the Bees and they were able to score one run in the third; two runs in the fourth; and five runs in the fifth. In fact the Bees tied the game with their first run in the fifth without getting a hit. The first four batters walked before Nick Rickles gave the Bees the lead with a two-run single. After five innings the Bees led 8-4 and never looked back.

The Bees look to sweep the Great Lakes Loons in game three at Community Field on Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. For tickets, call (319) 754-5705 or visit www.gobees.com for more information.
