Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
DAYTON, Ohio -- The Fort Wayne TinCaps split a doubleheader with the Dayton Dragons (Cincinnati Reds affiliate) on Sunday at Day Air Ballpark.
The TinCaps dominated the first game, 13-2, on the back of four home runs. Center fielder Robert Hassell III hit an opposite-field home run in the second at-bat of the game to get the scoring going. Right fielder Joshua Mears followed it up with a blast of his own to go back-to-back.
In the bottom half of the inning, right-handed starter Ryan Bergert struck out the side in order to begin his TinCaps career. Fort Wayne led 2-0 after the first inning. The 'Caps extended the lead in the third inning with three extra-base hits. Ripken Reyes doubled, as did Mears, before a Jarryd Dale two-run home run. The 'Caps scored four total in the fourth inning to lead 6-0.
Though Dayton responded with two runs in their half of the third, the sixth inning provided plenty of run support needed for the Fort Wayne staff. The TinCaps scored seven runs, capped off by Mears' second homer of the day - an 400-plus-foot blast that hit the scoreboard beyond the left-field wall.
Edwuin Bencomo and Alek Jacob combined for 4 and 2/3 innings pitched of scoreless relief to earn the team's first win of the 2022 season.
However, Fort Wayne lost, 5-1, in the second game of the doubleheader. Dale gave the TinCaps a lead in the second inning when the Melbourne, Australia native doubled and came around to score on a wild pitch. Despite Fort Wayne collecting six hits and six walks, that was the only run the 'Caps could muster.
TinCaps outfielder Corey Rosier picked up his first hit as a member of the Padres organization with a single in the second inning. Rosier was acquired via trade from the Seattle Mariners organization in the offseason.
Mears added to his successful day with a fourth extra-base hit, a double in the fifth inning. Angel Solarte also picked up his first hit of the campaign.
