Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
PEORIA, Ill. -- The TinCaps continued their winning ways on Thursday night at Dozer Park. This time Fort Wayne did it coming from behind late in a 5-2 victory over the Peoria Chiefs (St. Louis Cardinals affiliate) as right fielder Joshua Mears mashed an eighth-inning, go-ahead, two-out, three-run home run. The 'Caps have won four of their last five.
For the 21-year-old Mears, San Diego's No. 8 prospect, it was his ninth homer in 34 games with Fort Wayne this season. That catapulted the 'Caps (13-14, 40-53) ahead, 3-1.
Though Peoria (11-16, 39-54) pulled to within a run in the bottom of the eighth inning, Fort Wayne added insurance in the ninth. Top Padres prospect Robert Hassell III oferred an RBI double and first baseman Cole Cummings came through with a two-out, run-scoring single.
While Mears provided the power, it was left field Corey Rosier who continued to spark the TinCaps' success. With his squad trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Rosier recorded his team-leading fifth outfield assist of the season as Peoria's Brady Whalen singled, but Todd Lott was thrown out at the plate trying to score from second base.
In the ensuing half inning, after third baseman Lucas Dunn drew a two-out walk, Rosier legged out an infield single on a ball hit near second base. That set the stage for Mears.
On the night, Rosier singled in the fourth as well and stole his 31st base of the season. That ranks fourth in the Midwest League. The 'Caps were four-for-four swiping bags as a team.
Hassell also singled and walked, finishing 2-for-4. Fort Wayne, which leads the league in walks drawn, earned 10 free passes.
Meanwhile, on the mound, starter Dwayne Matos tossed 4 2/3 scoreless innings. After 1 1/3 innings of 1-run ball from Seth Mayberry, Edwuin Bencomo went the next two with one run charged to his name. Ramón Pérez earned his third save with a no-run ninth.
