Timing Is Everything

December 11, 2015 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

Kevin Charyszyn scored his first United States Hockey League goal with 9.9 seconds remaining Friday to lift the Waterloo Black Hawks past the Fargo Force, 4-3, at Young Arena.

Cheryszyn gave Waterloo the decisive score when a transition opportunity broke down but the puck came his way in the left circle. From there, he wristed a shot over the left shoulder of goalie Robbie Beydoun and into the top corner of the net.

There had been no lack of scoring action during the opening 20 minutes. Waterloo capitalized first when Hunter Luhmann knocked an Alex Robert rebound past Beydoun at 4:27. Fargo balanced the accounts on a Jarod Hilderman shot a moment after a power play ended at 10:31. Waterloo scored under the exact same circumstances as the Force were coming to full strength at 13:00; Nick Swaney pushed in the rebound of a sharp-angled Ronnie Hein chance.

Then Hein and Swaney combined to strike again, this time in transition, at 16:30, with Swaney following Hein to the net and putting back his second of the game. However, Denis Smirnov scored on his own rebound at the other end of the ice with 22.9 seconds left before intermission to draw Fargo back within one.

The second period was much more offensively tempered. The lone goal of the period evened the score at 3:14 when Blake Lizotte lifted a backhander into the net. Fargo outshot Waterloo 13-5 in the frame.

Each team finished the night with 32 shots on goal. Hawks netminder Drew Hotte picked up the victory with 29 saves.

The Hawks and Force get together again Saturday at 3:05 p.m. Good seats are available for the contest from waterlooblackhawks.com or by calling (319) 291-7680.
