Portland Timbers News Release
Timbers kick off three-game road swing Saturday against Montreal Impact
PORTLAND, Ore. - Kicking off a three-game road swing, the Portland Timbers travel to square off against the Montreal Impact at Stade Saputo in Montreal on Saturday; kickoff is set for 1 p.m. (Pacific). Saturday's match will be carried live on ROOT SPORTS with a local radio broadcast on 750/102.9 The Game and in Spanish on La GranD 93.5 FM.
Portland (2-3-4, 10pts) and Montreal (0-2-2, 2pts) meet for just the fourth time in the all-time MLS series on Saturday, but the history between the two clubs dates back to the second-division era in 2001. During the USL second-division era from 2001 to 2010, the Timbers and Impact squared off against each other 15 times with Portland earning an 8-4-3 overall record against their Canadian opponents. In seven road meetings, the Timbers registered a 4-1-2 record. Overall, Portland outscored Montreal 16-8 before making the jump to Major League Soccer in 2011. In MLS, the Timbers tallied their first road win against Montreal in 2014, earning a 3-2 win at Stade Saputo as midfielder Diego Valeri netted the game-winning goal in the 82nd minute. Portland is 1-2-0 all-time against the Impact in MLS since 2012.
The Timbers will look to continue their recent road success on Saturday against Montreal. Since 2013, Portland's 12 road losses (11-12-15) rank as the fewest in MLS during the last two-plus seasons. Additionally, Portland is 4-2-2 when playing matches in the Eastern Time Zone since 2013, including a 1-0 win against New York City FC on April 19 at Yankee Stadium.
Defensively, Portland has conceded just one goal in its last three matches, while surrendering just eight goals in nine regular-season matches and compiling 0.89 goals-against average, which ranks as the fourth-lowest in MLS entering the week.
Portland enters Saturday's match after recording their fourth shutout of the season in a scoreless draw against Vancouver Whitecaps FC, finishing with a passing accuracy above 80 percent (86) for the fourth straight game. In the match, midfielder Diego Valeri made his 2015 season debut for the Timbers, playing 38 minutes in his first competitive action since recovering from a torn ACL in his left knee sustained in the last match of the 2014 season on Oct. 25, 2014.
Montreal (0-2-2, 2pts) comes into Saturday's match following a 1-0 win over Toronto FC in the first leg of the semifinal round of the 2015 Amway Canadian Championship on Wednesday at Stade Saputo. The Impact have not played an MLS regular-season match since April 11 in a 3-0 loss against the Houston Dynamo. Outside of MLS play, head coach Frank Klopas' side reached the finals of the 2014-15 CONCACAF Champions League tournament, beating Mexican side Pachuca and Costa Rica's Alajuelense on away goals in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively. In the final, Montreal lost the two-legged series 5-3 on aggregate to Mexican side Club América.
Following Saturday's match, the Timbers continue on the road to take on the Houston Dynamo on Saturday, May 16, at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston; kickoff is set for 5:30 p.m. (Pacific). The match against the Dynamo will be broadcast live on KPTV FOX 12 with a local radio broadcast on 750/102.9 The Game and in Spanish on LaGranD 95.3 FM.
