Timbers return to MLS action, travel to take on LA Galaxy Sunday
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers return to MLS play on Sunday as they visit the LA Galaxy at The Home Depot Center at 4 p.m. (Pacific). Sunday's match opens a stretch of 10 straight matches against Western Conference opponents.
The matchup against the Galaxy will be televised live on KPTV, in Spanish on Estrella TV and across the Portland Timbers Television Network in the Oregon markets of Bend (NTVZ/Central Oregon's CW), Eugene (KEVU/MyNetworkTV) and Medford (KFBI-TV/My48). Live radio broadcasts will air on 750 AM The Game and in Spanish on La Pantera 940 AM.
The Timbers (3-5-4, 13pts) return to action after a 17-day break in play. Portland is currently on a four-game unbeaten streak (1-0-3) in league play, capping an unbeaten month of May with a 1-1 draw against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on May 26.
The Timbers and Galaxy (3-8-2, 11pts) square off for the second time this season. The two sides met previously on April 14 at The Home Depot Center, with the Galaxy claiming a 3-1 win after the Timbers struck first on a Kris Boyd goal. Since Portland joined MLS in 2011, the home side has won each matchup in the all-time series between the Timbers and Galaxy; LA leads the all-time series 2-1-0. The Timbers and Galaxy play for a third time in 2012 on July 14 at JELD-WEN Field.
Following the Timbers-Galaxy match on Sunday, the Timbers Reserves play an MLS Reserve League match against the Chivas USA Reserves on Monday, June 18, at The Home Depot Center at 11 a.m. (Pacific).
TIMBERS GAME NOTES vs. LA GALAXY
- The Timbers and Galaxy meet for the second and final time this season at The Home Depot Center. The third matchup between the two clubs in 2012 will be held JELD-WEN Field on July 14. LA leads the all-time series against Portland 2-1-0.
- The winner of the three previous meetings between the Timbers and Galaxy has scored exactly three goals in each of those wins.
- The Galaxy become the Timbers' first opponent this season that they have played a second time.
- Sunday will mark the Timbers' first road fixture in over a month. The club's last road match was a scoreless draw against the Houston Dynamo on May 15.
- In the two previous games between Portland and LA at The Home Depot Center, the Galaxy have scored a combined six goals - three in each half.
TIMBERS PLAYER NOTES vs. LA GALAXY
- Timbers goalkeeper Troy Perkins made his 41st consecutive start for the Timbers on May 26 against Vancouver. Perkins' streak of consecutive starts ranks among the longest for active MLS goalkeepers.
- In three games against the Timbers, Galaxy midfielder Landon Donovan has recorded three goals and two assists.
- While away on national team duty, Timbers players Futty Danso (The Gambia), Jake Gleeson (New Zealand), Lovel Palmer (Jamaica), Steve Purdy (El Salvador) and Rodney Wallace (Costa Rica) will have competed in 14 combined international matches from June 1-16.
- The Galaxy will be without midfielders Hector Jimenez and Michael Stephens and forward Mike Magee on Sunday against the Timbers due to MLS-imposed suspensions.

Join the Timbers' official viewing party Sunday at Paddy's Bar & Grill in Portland
Fans are invited to join the Timbers' official viewing party Sunday afternoon at Paddy's Bar & Grill in Portland, presented by ROOT SPORTS. Sunday's viewing party is open to fans of all ages and begins at 4 p.m.
Paddy's Bar & Grill, located at 65 SW Yamhill in Portland, is one of several local pubs and restaurants featured with the club's Pub Partner program. The viewing party will include guest appearances by Timbers Alumni Ambassadors Bernie Fagan and Lee Morrison. There will also be food and drink specials throughout the viewing party for fans wearing Timbers gear.
Fan voting for 2012 AT&T MLS All-Star Game underway; six Timbers on the ballot
Fan voting for the 2012 AT&T MLS All-Star Game on July 25 is currently underway. The 2012 MLS All-Stars will take on England's Chelsea FC on July 25 at PPL Park in Chester, Pa., at 5:30 p.m. (Pacific ) on ESPN2.
The fan ballot, consisting of 114 MLS players selected by a panel of media members, includes six Timbers players - goalkeeper Troy Perkins, defender Eric Brunner, defender/midfielder Jack Jewsbury, midfielder Diego Chara, midfielder/forward Darlington Nagbe and forward Kris Boyd.

Timbers to assist in grand opening of new THPRD Fanno Creek Service Center June 20
With an assist from the Timbers, the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District (THPRD) will formally unveil its new Fanno Creek Service Center, which includes the new adidas Timbers Training Center, to the public with a grand-opening event on Wednesday, June 20.
The free event, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., will include tours of the new THPRD's new maintenance plant, a scrimmage by the Portland Timbers U-23s, a youth soccer clinic for kids ages 8-12, an autograph session with Timbers players Jake Gleeson and Mike Fucito and an appearance by Timber Joey.
Located at 6220 SW 112th Avenue in Beaverton, the Fanno Creek Service Center is home base for THPRD's building, park, fleet and athletic field maintenance groups and provides office space for the district's Maintenance, Planning, and Natural Resources staffs. It includes a 90,000-square-foot building and more than 13 acres of land, which houses the Timbers' training complex.
Portland's Lovel Palmer, Steve Purdy wrap up international duty
Timbers midfielder Lovel Palmer (Jamaica) and defender Steve Purdy (El Salvador) each played key roles in their respective countries latest 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaigns.
Palmer started and played the full 90 in qualifiers against Guatemala on June 8 and Antigua & Barbuda on Tuesday as Jamaica sits in a tie with the United States at the top of Group A with four points from its first two group games.
Purdy also started and played a full 90 minutes in El Salvador's qualifiers against Costa Rica and Mexico. After a 2-2 draw against Costa Rica on June 8, El Salvador fell 2-1 at home to Mexico on a late goal by Hector Moreno.
Timbers and Grassroot Soccer partner to help raise money to fight HIV in Africa
The Timbers joined in the fun at the Portland Barefoot 3v3 Tournament on June 10, held at Concordia University. The third-annual event served as a fundraiser for Grassroot Soccer, Inc., a nonprofit aimed at using the power of soccer to prevent and treat HIV in Africa.
The Portland Timbers U-23s and Portland Rain, an adidas Timbers Alliance club, were featured in marquee matches against the Concordia University men's and women's teams, respectively. In total, 110, three-player teams competed in the barefoot soccer tournament and helped raise over $10,000 for Grassroots Soccer. Click here for more on the event and the Timbers' involvement.
Step out of the office and onto the pitch: Register for the 2012 Portland Timbers Corporate Cup
The 2012 Portland Timbers Corporate Cup this summer brings Northwest corporations together for soccer and corporate networking, all while raising money for Timbers community pillar partner Portland YouthBuilders. Registration for the three-part event concludes June 30, click here to register.
Corporate teams will play matches against other corporate teams, as well as participate in a mix-and-mingle social event. The 2012 Timbers Corporate Cup final will be held at JELD-WEN Field on Aug. 18.
MLS launches third-annual Community MVP Contest
Major League Soccer has launched the 2012 MLS W.O.R.K.S. Community MVP contest. Fans throughout the league can nominate individuals who are committed to going above and beyond to make a difference in their communities.
Winners will be selected based on their efforts in one of the following areas: general community service; youth programming; environmental sustainability; health and wellness; education; military or civic service. Submissions of 500 words or less will be accepted until June 21; click here to submit a nomination.
One Community MVP will be chosen to represent each of the 19 MLS clubs and will receive a prize package including VIP tickets, local recognition and an autographed item. One Grand Prize winner will receive a $10,000 donation to the charity of their choice and a trip to the 2012 AT&T MLS All-Star Game at PPL Park on July 25.

The show will provide team news and the latest information from around MLS during the 2012 season.
