PORTLAND, Ore. - Forward David Estrada recorded a goal and an assist as the Seattle Sounders FC Reserves defeated the Portland Timbers Reserves 4-1 in the 2013 MLS Reserve League season finale for both teams before 3,209 fans at JELD-WEN Field on Monday afternoon.
The Sounders FC Reserves (4-6-2, 14pts) scored twice off rebounds in the first half to take a 2-0 lead in the 34th minute. Estrada provided the opening goal in the seventh minute, putting away the follow-up after forward Eriq Zaveleta's initial attempt was saved by Timbers goalkeeper Milos Kocic. Midfielder Philip Lund's shot in the 34th minute produced a rebound opportunity for midfielder Mike Azira, who punched it in the net to double the lead for the Sounders FC Reserves heading into halftime.
The Timbers Reserves (4-7-3, 15pts) had the chance to strike in the first half when they were awarded a penalty kick in the 27th minute after Seattle defender Will Bates tackled forward Sebastian RincÃÆ"n inside the box. RincÃÆ"n pushed his attempt wide left of the goal.
The Timbers Reserves pulled one back early in the second half. RincÃÆ"n stole the ball in Seattle territory and broke in on goal. From inside the top left corner of the box, RincÃÆ"n beat Sounders FC goalkeeper Doug Herrick inside the near post in the 54th minute for his second goal of the MLS Reserve League season.
Sounders FC midfielder Andy Rose responded in the 70th minute with a header inside the box off a cross by Estrada to extend the lead back to two.
One minute after entering the match as a substitute in the 81st minute, defender Cody Crook provided the final goal of the match for the Sounders FC Reserves. Set up by midfielder Duncan McCormick, Crook sent a right-footed strike from the top of the box into the back of the net to seal the 4-1 victory.
Kocic finished the match with eight saves, recording four in each half.
