Eastern Conference Roundup
October 14, 2013 - Major League Soccer (MLS)
Columbus Crew SC News Release
While the Crew was off in Week 33, seven of the 10 Eastern Conference clubs were in action as the playoff picture was affected by New England and Chicago wins.
Here is how the East looks with two weeks remaining in the season.
1. New York Red Bulls - 53 pts. - Week 33: Idle
The Red Bulls stayed on top of the Eastern Conference through their off week thanks to a 0-0 draw between Sporting Kansas City and the Houston Dynamo. New York returns to action on Sunday against the Dynamo.
2. Sporting Kansas City - 52 pts. - Week 33: 0-0 Draw at Houston Dynamo
Though Graham Zusi and Matt Besler were out due to National Team duty, Sporting secured a road point in Houston to clinch a playoff spot in a midweek tilt with the Dynamo. Kansas City hosts D.C. United at Sporting Park in Week 34 action.
3. Houston Dynamo - 48 pts. - Week 33: 0-0 Draw vs. Sporting Kansas City
Unbeaten in five matches, the Dynamo looks primed to return to the playoffs in 2013 following a home draw against Sporting Kansas City. Dom Kinnear's men host the New York Red Bulls on Sunday.
4. Montreal Impact - 46 pts. - Week 33: 1-0 Loss vs. New England Revolution
The Impact is in trouble. Having spent multiple weeks in first place, Montreal has lost four of its last five and faces the possibility of missing the playoffs. Even more troubling, Marco Schallibaum's squad is just 4-9-5 since losing to the Crew on June 15. The Impact travels to LA to face the Galaxy on Wednesday before hosting the Philadelphia Union on Saturday.
5. Chicago Fire - 46 pts. - Week 33: 3-2 Win at FC Dallas
The Fire secured a 3-2-road victory over FC Dallas to move into fifth place in the Eastern Conference with two matches remaining. The Men in Red host Toronto in Week 34.
6. Philadelphia Union - 46 pts. - Week 33: 1-1 Draw at D.C. United
Jack McInerney scored his first goal since June 2 in the 90th minute to help the Union to a road point at D.C. United. Philadelphia will need the young striker's scoring touch when it travels to Montreal for a pivotal Eastern Conference showdown on Saturday.
7. New England Revolution - 45 pts. - Week 33: 1-0 Win at Montreal Impact
Jose Gon̮̤alves scored to lift the Revs over the Montreal Impact on the road. Jay Heaps will need to find another attacking option in his team's final two matches against the Columbus Crew as Saer Sene was lost for the season with a dislocated ankle and broken fibula. The Revolution will also be without Lee Nguyen due to yellow card accumulation on Saturday against the Black & Gold.
8. Columbus Crew - 41 pts. - Week 33: Idle
A week off provided playmaker Federico HiguaÃÆ-n time to let a sore hip heal. The Argentine will be crucial to the Black & Gold's playoff hopes as Columbus faces the New England Revolution in a home-and-home series to end the 2013 season.
9. Toronto FC - 26 pts. - Week 33: Idle
Like the Crew, the Reds were off in Week 33 as they prepare for Saturday's trip to Chicago to face the Fire.
10. D.C. United - 16 pts. - Week 33: 1-1 Draw at D.C. United
D.C. United left for 54 minutes before Jack McInerney tallied to leave the Black-and-Red with just a point at home. D.C. travels to Kansas City in Week 34.ÃâÃÂ
