Timbers Open Preseason Tournament with 2-1 Win over Vancouver Whitecaps FC

PORTLAND, Ore. - Playing the first of three preseason matches as part of the Timbers Preseason Tournament, presented by Old Trapper Beef Jerky, at Providence Park, the Portland Timbers recorded a goal in each half to register a 2-1 win over Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Sunday evening. Diego Valeri tallied a goal in the first half for Portland, while Andy Polo recorded the second goal of the match.

Providence Park debuts

Six players made their debuts at Providence Park in preseason action for Portland: Pablo Bonilla, Yimmi Chara, Chris Duvall, Aljaz Ivacic, Felipe Mora and Dario Zuparic.

Preseason Progression

Sunday's match marked the fourth match of the 2020 preseason for the Timbers. Portland opened the preseason with three matches in Costa Rica. In total, 23 players appeared in Sunday's match for the Timbers. Jeremy Ebobisse made his preseason debut, logging 15 minutes.

Notes

Valeri has tallied 10 goals in preseason matches for the Timbers, including four goals in his last four preseason matches at Providence Park. Polo recorded his first goal of the 2020 preseason and has now tallied a goal in three consecutive preseasons. With the win, Portland improved to 4-0-0 in its 2020 preseason campaign, outscoring its opponents 10-3.

Goal-Scoring Plays

POR - Diego Valeri (penalty kick), 34th minute: Mora was fouled near the edge of the six-yard box after receiving a pass from Sebastián Blanco. Valeri stepped to the spot and converted the penalty kick.

VAN - Lucas Cavallini (Ali Adnan), 39th minute: Ali Adnan delivered a cross from the left edge of the box to the near post and Cavallini directed a diving header into the back of the net from close range.

POR - Andy Polo (Diego Valeri), 46th minute - Less than 20 seconds into the second half, Polo made a run down the right side of field, received a pass in stride from Valeri and fired a shot from a tight angle near the right edge of the box into the left side of the net.

Next game

Up next, the Timbers take on Minnesota United FC on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at Providence Park; kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. (Pacific).
