Portland Timbers News Release

HOUSTON - Despite overcoming an early deficit on the road, the Portland Timbers couldn't overcome a late second-half surge by host Houston Dynamo, conceding two goals inside the final 15 minutes in a 3-1 loss at BBVA Compass Stadium on Saturday night.

After conceding the opening goal to Houston forward Will Bruin on a header off a free kick in the ninth minute, the Timbers did well to kick off the second half strong - capturing the equalizer in the 48th minute. Picking up a loose ball, midfielder Diego Valeri delivered a through ball into the right side of the penalty box for forward Fanendo Adi, who shouldered Dynamo defender DaMarcus Beasley out of his path and fired the game-tying goal past goalkeeper Tyler Deric.

Midfielder Giles Barnes tallied the go-ahead goal for Houston (4-4-4, 16pts) in the 75th minute, taking a pass from substitute midfielder Alexander López near the penalty spot and converting a one-touch finish from close range. Shortly after Barnes' goal, Bruin netted his second goal of the match as defender Jermaine Taylor delivered a long ball over the Timbers defenders that Bruin lofted over goalkeeper Adam Kwarasey, who had come off his line in the 83rd minute.

Playing the second match of a three-game road swing, the Timbers (3-4-4, 13pts) finished with 56 percent of the possession, including 60 percent in the first half.

The Timbers continue their three-game road swing with a match against Toronto FC on Saturday, May 23, at BMO Field in Toronto; kickoff is set for 2 p.m. (Pacific). The match against Toronto FC will be carried live on ROOT SPORTS with a local radio broadcast on 750/102.9 The Game and in Spanish on La GranD 93.5 FM.
