
Timbers Drop Road Result to Houston Dynamo FC

HOUSTON - Playing their first regular season match in over a month, the Portland Timbers dropped a 5-0 result to Houston Dynamo FC at Shell Energy Stadium on Sunday night. Portland will return home to host Cascadia rival Vancouver Whitecaps FC at Providence Park on Saturday, Aug. 26 with a 7:30 p.m. (Pacific) kickoff.
Goal-Scoring Plays
HOU - Amine Bassi (penalty kick), 5th minute: The Timbers were whistled for a foul in the box and Amine Bassi converted the penalty kick for Houston.
HOU - Nelson Quiñónes (Héctor Herrera), 11th minute: Héctor Herrera headed the ball down for Nelson Quiñónes at the penalty spot. With his back to goal, Quiñónes whipped a right-footed volley low and hard into the back of the net.
HOU - Corey Baird (Adalberto Carrasquilla), 14th minute: Adalberto Carrasquilla played a through ball for Corey Baird, who dribbled down the right side of the box and placed a shot into the far corner of the goal.
HOU - Franco Escobar (Corey Baird), 45+3 minute: Franco Escobar and Corey Baird combined for a give-and-go outside of the box. Escobar dribbled into the six-yard area and chipped the ball into the back of the net.
HOU - Brad Smith (Steve Clark), 63rd minute: Steve Clark played a long ball over the top for Brad Smith, who brought the ball down with one touch and curled it into the top right corner of the goal from outside of the 18-yard box.
Notes
Miguel Araujo made his MLS debut and earned his first start for the Timbers.
Bryan Acosta debuted for the Timbers with a start in tonight's match.
Acosta finished with a match-high five interceptions.
Cristhian Paredes won a match-high three tackles and six duels.
Tonight's result snapped the Timbers' eight game unbeaten streak (5-0-3) against the Dynamo.
Portland finished the match with 10 men on the field after Jaroslaw Niezgoda exited the match and the team was out of substitutions.
The Timbers have 10 matches left in the 2023 campaign, including six home games.
Portland had six players listed as unavailable ahead of tonight's match (David Ayala, Diego Chara, Marvin Loría, Zac McGraw, Santiago Moreno, Eryk Williamson).

The Timbers will return home to host Cascadia rival Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday, Aug. 26, at Providence Park.
