SIOUX CITY, IA - The Sioux City Explorers announced today that the club has re-signed OF Tim Colwell to a 2016 American Association contract. The 2016 season will mark Colwell's 3rd season of professional baseball with the Explorers.

Colwell first signed with the X's on June 13th, 2014 and appeared in 64 games during the 2014 season, leading the team in stolen bases with 19. Colwell's best game in an X's uniform came on June 29th in a game at Amarillo where he went 5-6 at the plate with 4 RBIs and 4 runs scored. He would finish the 2014 season with a .307 batting average, compiling 70 hits including 10 doubles, 2 triples, and a homerun while scoring 46 runs and finishing with 34 RBIs. Colwell contributed to the X's record breaking 2015 season by collecting 75 hits, stealing 29 bases, and scoring 44 runs offensively a year ago while playing in 85 games in left field with a .994 fielding percentage defensively.

Prior to joining the Explorers, Colwell enjoyed a storied collegiate career at North Dakota State University from 2011-2014 where he still holds career records there for most hits (291), most triples (18), most runs scored (172), most stolen bases (52), most games played (211), most games started (208), and most at-bats (830). As a senior in 2014, Colwell was named the Summit League Player of the Year, Summit League Male Scholar Athlete of the Year, and also was named the Capital One Academic All-American of the Year for Division I baseball, becoming the first ever NDSU baseball student-athlete to win the prestigious award. The Shoreview, MN native was named first team Academic All-America for the third straight year after starting in all 51 games in centerfield for NDSU and batting .378 with 76 hits, 44 runs scored, 19 stolen bases, and boasting a .438 on base percentage on way to leading the Bison to their first ever Summit League tournament title and 1st ever appearance in the NCAA Division I baseball tournament since NDSU reclassified in 2004.

As a sophomore in 2012, Colwell became the first all-region player in North Dakota State's Division I program history by being named to the All-Midwest Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association. His .381 batting average and .438 on-base percentage was tops on the team, while also leading the Bison in hits (93), runs (62), triples (9), and stolen bases (12). He set North Dakota State single-season records for games played, at-bats, hits, and triples while also twice tying the single-game record for hits with five.

The Explorers now have 9 position players and 4 pitchers signed to 2016 American Association contracts with the re-signing of Colwell.

The Explorers 2016 home opener is set for Thursday, May 19th versus the Sioux Falls Canaries.  Get in the game with the Sioux City Explorers and reserve your 2016 season ticket packages, flex ticket packages or company group outing by calling 712-277-WINS (9467).
