VISALIA - Jayson Nix hit a sacrifice fly to right field in the bottom of the ninth inning that allowed Hector Tena to score the winning run as the Oaks slid past Bakersfield 5-4. It was Visalia's second win in three games following a five game losing streak.
Alex Serrano retired all nine batters he faced in relief of Oaks starter Gerrit Simpson who set down the last three batters he faced. In all the final twelve Bakersfield hitters in the game were retired in order.
Tony Miller tied the game 4-4 with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the fourth to set up the ninth inning heroics. It was Miller's second blast of the series and the season. Miller also made a pair of diving catches in centerfield to help keep the game tied as it moved to the late innings.
Bakersfield scored all four of their runs in the second inning, which was capped by a two-run home run by Juan Salas, which was his fourth of the year.
Nix doubled with two out in the first and scored Visalia's first run on a single to center by first baseman Bryan Peck. Peck also drove in a run on a ground ball in the third inning when the Oaks scored twice to trim Bakersfield's lead to 4-3.
Simpson pitched six innings and for the third straight start did not record a decision. Jarrett Campbell allowed no runs in 2.2 innings of middle relief for the Blaze.
One Run: Wednesday's win for the Oaks was the third straight one run game between the two teams and the fourth in four days (a five game span).
Rehab: LHP Denny Neagle has been assigned by the Oaks parent club, the Colorado Rockies to make a rehabilitation start on Thursday at Recreation Park. Neagle underwent surgery to remove bone chips from his left arm last October and has been working out in extended spring training in Tucson up to this point. LHP Chris Seddon (2-0, 1.74 ERA) will pitch for Bakersfield. It will be the last of eight games in a row between the two teams. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.. The Radisson Hotel Visalia Pre Game Show begins at 6:22 p.m. on AM 1270 KJUG.
