Lancaster Stormers News Release
In the rubber match between the Lancaster Barnstormers and Sugar Land Skeeters, Terry Tiffee exploded for five RBI over two innings leading Lancaster to a 7-4 victory at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Tiffee's night included a three run home run in the bottom of the 7th inning off of lefty Heath Phillips (0-2) that vaulted the Barnstormers into a 5-4 lead. The following inning, the Barnstormers switch hitting DH doubled home a pair of insurance runs against right-hander Sean Morgan that provided the final margin of victory.
With one out in the seventh, Brandon Haveman singled up the middle off Michael Nix, and Adam Godwin followed with a walk. Nix got Fehlandt Lentini on a called third strike for the second out. Sugar Land manager Gary Gaetti wanted to turn Tiffee around to the right side in the lefty friendly confines on Prince Street, but the results turned out disastrous for the Skeeters. Tiffee drilled Phillips' first pitch to the opposite field for his first homer of the season. In the eighth, Godwin and Lentini reached on two-out singles prior to Tiffee's two-out liner to right center.
The Skeeters struck in the top of the first inning when Jason Botts ripped a double inside the third base bag, scoring Drew Locke who had singled to open the game. They extended the lead to 2-0 off starter John Halama in the third. After Josh Pressley grounded into a double play to erase a leadoff walk, Ben Harrison grounded a single up the middle. He raced home when Jimmy Van Ostrand drove a double over the head of left fielder Brandon Haveman. Jaime Pedroza got Lancaster on the board in the third with a leadoff homer to the Clipper Magazine Stadium picnic deck. However, Bubba Bell countered with a two-run blast to the walkway in right center in the fourth for a 4-1 Sugar Land advantage.
After the Bell homer, the Skeeters offense came to a screeching halt as the visitors reached base only once more on the night, giving the Barnstormers the comeback chance. They could only mount a mild attack in the sixth against former Barnstormer Matt Wright on three singles and a throwing error that produced one tally.
Beau Vaughan (1-0) pitched a scoreless seventh for the win. Tim Hamulack worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his league leading fourth save. Lancaster will entertain Camden on Monday evening. J.D. Durbin (0-0) will take the hill against the Riversharks and right-hander Sean Jarrett (1-1). Game time is 7:00. It will be aired on WLAN, 1390-AM and 1390wlan.com beginning at 6:45.
