Norfolk Tides News Release
Terry Tiffee homered twice and drove in four, lifting the Tides to a 7-2 win over the Columbus Clippers Sunday night from Harbor Park.
Tiffee launched a three-run shot in the third inning and a solo shot off the right field scoreboard in the eighth, finishing the contest 3-for-4. The 28-year-old switch-hitter is now hitting .611 (11-for-18) with 11 RBI over his last five games, and has hit safely in 14 of his last 15 contests. Tiffee is also hitting .364 (24-for-66) with four home runs and 20 RBI in the month of July.
Tiffee's big night helped make a winner of Norfolk starter Jim Johnson (5-9), although the 24-year-old right-hander did not need much help. Johnson, who entered the contest ranked 10th in the IL with a 3.93 ERA, yielded just one run on seven hits in seven innings of work, helping the Tides pick up their 4th win in five contests. The right-hander walked one and struck out five.
With the win, Norfolk improved to 49-52, the first time the Tides have been three games under .500 since their record stood at 7-10 on April 25. Norfolk is 24-13 in their last 37 games.
J.R. House helped power Norfolk's 10-hit attack with two hits and two RBI, while Tike Redman added two hits and a run driven in.
Columbus scored on an RBI single by Mike Restovich in the third inning and a run-scoring double off the bat of Abraham Nunez in the eighth. Shorstop Melvin Dorta also singled in the third inning to extend his hitting streak to a season-high 11 games.
Joel Hanrahan (5-4) took the loss for the Clippers, allowing four second inning runs on six hits in six innings of work. Hanrahan walked three and struck out four.
The Tides have now guaranteed at least a split of the current four-game set, the 11th straight series in which the Tides have either split or won.
Norfolk will look to pick up another series win in Monday night's series finale, as Craig Anderson (3-2, 3.19) takes the hill for the Tides against Clippers' southpaw Brandon Claussen (1-0, 7.53). First pitch is set for 7:15.
