Tides win 6-0

May 13, 2006 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release

Evan MacLane struck out 12 in 7.0 shutout innings, pitching the Tides past the Columbus Clippers 6-0 in front of 9,149 fans at Harbor Park Saturday night.

MacLane, who was making just his second Triple-A start after being promoted from Double-A Binghamton on May 8th, completely dominated in his Harbor Park debut. The 23-year-old southpaw yielded just four hits, and the 12 strikeouts were a career-high, besting an 11-strikeout performance he had during the 2003 season with Rookie level Kingsport.

Norfolk wasted no time in giving MacLane an early cushion, as the Tides took advantage of a very wild outing by Columbus starter Matt DeSalvo (1-4) to jump out to an early lead.

Lastings Milledge was hit by a pitch to lead off the game, and moved to third base after consecutive groundouts by Anderson Hernandez and Michael Tucker. DeSalvo then issued five consecutive two-out walks, forcing in two runs and causing Columbus manager Dave Miley to pull him from the game having faced just eight batters. Tides shortstop Chris Basak then lined a two-run single off of Clippers reliever Matt Childers, giving the Tides a 5-0 lead after one inning of play.

The five runs were more than enough for MacLane, who retired 14 straight batters at one point, including a stretch where he fanned seven of eight. He is now 2-0 with a 0.64 ERA in two starts for the Tides this season.

Basak and Michael Tucker each had three hits to pace the Tides offense, as Norfolk won for the second straight time to open the four game set.

It was a night of season-highs, as the Tides struck out a season-high 16 batters, while Norfolk hitters drew a season-high eight walks in front of a season-high crowd of 9,149. The six-run margin of victory matched a season-high, and the 12 strikeouts by MacLane were more than any Tides hurler has had this season.

Norfolk continues their four-game set with a 1:15 contest Sunday afternoon from Harbor Park. Jeriome Robertson will be making his first start for the Tides, and will be opposed by Columbus' Ramiro Mendoza.
