Tides Fall to Gwinnett, 2-1

April 20, 2010 - International League (IL1)
Norfolk Tides News Release

The Tides dropped their fifth straight game Tuesday night, falling to the Gwinnett Braves 2-1.

The Braves jumped out to an early lead off of Norfolk starter Alfredo Simon (1-1), as Brent Clevlen brought home Matt Young with a two-out first inning single to give Gwinnett an early 1-0 advantage. The score remained that way until the seventh frame, when the Braves took advantage of a throwing error by second baseman Scott Moore to score an unearned run and extend their lead to 2-0.

Norfolk pulled within a run in the eighth inning on a two-out RBI double by Robert Andino, but Scott Proctor retired Jeff Salazar on a flyout to center to avoid any further damage. Braves closer Craig Kimbrel then worked a perfect ninth inning to register his third save of the season and give Gwinnett two straight wins to open the four-game series.

Simon turned in his second straight strong outing for the Tides, as he yielded one earned run on six hits and three walks in seven innings of work. The 28-year-old struck out five and threw 58 of his 97 pitches for strikes.

Gwinnett starter Todd Redmond (2-1) earned the win, yielding one run on six hits in 7.1 innings. Redmond struck out four and lowered his ERA for the season to 1.69.

Andino and Salazar each had two hits apiece to lead Norfolk, which finished 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

The Tides and Braves will square off again on Wednesday night, with first pitch slated for 7:15. Troy Patton (0-2, 11.12) will take the hill for Norfolk against Gwinnett southpaw Ryne Reynoso (0-2, 6.30).
