Norfolk Tides News Release
August 22, 2008 - Norfolk rallied from an early deficit but couldn't push the tying run across in the 9th inning as they fell to the Toledo Mud Hens 6-5 Friday night at Harbor Park.
The Tides cut a 5-2 deficit to 6-4 entering the final frame, and Luis Terrero and Luis Hernandez both worked walks from Mud Hens closer Francisco Cruceta to open the inning. Tike Redman then lined a single to center that plated Terrero, and Eider Torres followed with a sacrifice bunt that put runners on second and third. Cruceta escaped the jam, however, by striking out Jeff Fiorentino and Freddie Bynum to earn his third save of the series.
With the loss, Norfolk dropped the series three games to one, the Tides first series loss since they lost a two-game set to Durham from June 27-28. Norfolk had won or split each of their previous 13 series.
Redman once again led Norfolk's offensive attack, as he finished with three hits and a run scored to raise his average to .297. He's now reached base safely in 56 of his last 60 games, and has hit .365 in the month of August.
Luis Terrero finished 2-for-3 with a homer, while Mike Costanzo added an RBI double.
Tides starter Garrett Olson (1-2) struggled in his first outing back with Norfolk, as he allowed five runs - four earned - on nine hits in five innings. Olson walked three and struck out five in the outing, tossing 93 pitches.
Gary Knotts tossed two scoreless innings in his Tides debut.
Virgil Vasquez (10-12) earned the win for the Hens, allowing four runs on five hits in five innings.
The Tides, who finished their homestand at 5-3, will travel to Charlotte on Saturday to start a four-game set with the Knights. Brian Burres (1-0, 0.82) is slated to make his second start for Norfolk against left-hander Wes Whisler (11-9, 3.55), with first pitch scheduled for 7:15.
