Durham Bulls News Release
DURHAM, NC - A day after the Bulls got a rain-shortened one-run win over Norfolk, the rain cost them a chance at a comeback against the Tides. Sunday's game was stopped in the bottom of the seventh with the tying run on third base and called after a lengthy delay, as the two teams swapped 3-2 decisions over the weekend series.
Norfolk jumped out to an early lead on Durham starter J.D. Martin (L, 5-2, 3.48), who lost for the first time in six decisions. Travis Ishikawa walked to open the second, and Luis Exposito singled him to second. L.J. Hoes doubled in Ishikawa for a 1-0 lead.
Ishikawa drove a 1-1 pitch from Martin over the right field wall in the sixth for home run number 7 on the year, doubling the Norfolk lead.
Durham got a run back in the bottom of the sixth when Norfolk shortstop Brandon Wood threw away a potential double-play ball, allowing Cole Figueroa to score from second.
The Bulls gave back an earned run in the top of the seventh when Tim Beckham made an error on L.J. Hoes' grounder.
The rains began in the bottom of the seventh as the Bulls rallied to cut the 3-1 Norfolk lead. Wil Myers and Leslie Anderson walked to open the inning, and Myers scored on a wild pitch, coupled with a throwing error on Norfolk catcher Luis Exposito. A single by Mike Fontenot put the tying run 90 feet away with no out and Tim Beckham at the plate when conditions became unplayable, and the umpires called for the tarp.
The loss put Durham four games behind Norfolk in the IL South. After an off day on Monday, the two teams resume their split four-game series in Norfolk on Tuesday.
