Syracuse Mets News Release
The Syracuse Chiefs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals, lost 4-3 to the Toledo Mud Hens on Sunday afternoon. Toledo first baseman Jordan Lennerton homered twice and knocked in three runs as the Chiefs dropped the second game of a four-game series.
Toledo (15-30) opened the scoring in the first inning thanks to the first of Lennerton's two blasts. He hit a 1-0 pitch from Ross Ohlendorf the other way for a solo home run, putting the Mud Hens on top early.
The 1-0 score remained until the fifth inning, the first of five consecutive half-innings that saw at least one run. Syracuse (16-27) tied the score in the top of the frame, which started with a Micah Owings double against Mud Hens southpaw Jose Alvarez. Two batters later, Carlos Rivero reached on an infield single to shortstop, advancing Owings to third base. After a Mike Costanzo pop out, catcher Kris Watts lined a two-strike single into center field to tie the score.
Lennerton answered for the Mud Hens in the bottom of the inning. With Argenis Diaz at first base and one out, the first baseman fouled off six two-strike pitches and worked a full count against Ohlendorf. On the at-bat's 12th pitch, Lennerton slugged a ball to the right of straightaway center field for a two-run home run and a 3-1 lead.
In the top of the sixth inning, Chris Marrero doubled with two outs to bring up Owings. The Syracuse left fielder followed with a single to right field against Alvarez, and Marrero beat the throw home to score the Chiefs' second run.
Toledo would respond once more with a sixth-inning run of its own. Bryan Holaday led off the inning with a single, and two batters later, Kevin Russo singled to conclude an 11-pitch at-bat and end Ohlendorf's day. Left-hander Fernando Abad entered and allowed a run-scoring single to Cory Jones, giving Toledo a 4-2 advantage.
Mike Costanzo grabbed another run for Syracuse in the top of the seventh inning, blasting a solo home run off of Alvarez with one out. Costanzo's sixth home run cut Toledo's lead to 4-3, but the blast ended up producing Syracuse's last base runner of the game. Alvarez, Brayan Villarreal and Bruce Rondon would retire the final eight Chiefs hitter in order to preserve the win.
Syracuse and Toledo will kick off the third game of their four-game set early on Monday morning with a 10:30 start. Chiefs right-hander Chris Young and Mud Hens right-hander Shawn Hill are the scheduled starters.
